An extravagant neo-baroque artist and outspoken proto-feminist, the mercurial Romana Laura Anzi survived Mussolini and the Nazis, risked her life carrying messages for the Italian Resistance, and wound up marrying a wisecracking bespectacled GI journalist who fought in the Italian Campaign then stayed on in Rome to woo her. Romana was the author’s mother. The GI—Charles E. Downie, Jr.—was his father.

In 1947, the Cold War came to Hollywood. Over nine tumultuous days in October, the House Un-American Activities Committee held a notorious round of hearings into alleged Communist subversion in the movie industry. The blowback was profound: the major studios pledged to never again employ a known Communist or unrepentant fellow traveler. The declaration marked the onset of the blacklist era, a time when political allegiances, real or suspected, determined employment opportunities in the entertainment industry. Hundreds of artists were shown the dooror had it shut in their faces.

Almost two hundred years before the liberal tradition of religious freedom, toleration, and consent was birthed in the west, a group of radical Christians in northern Europe had already rediscovered these ideas in the New Testament. They were called the Anabaptists. Western Protestant and Catholicism eventually caught on to these ideas, but Anabaptists have largely been ignored in the intellectual history of these ideas which informed the liberal tradition, libertarianism, and philosophical anarchism. The Anarchist Anabaptist seeks to restore Anabaptism to its rightful place in this history.

The left views alienation as something to be resisted or overcome, but could it actually form the basis of our emancipation? In Embracing Alienation, Todd McGowan offers a completely different take on alienation, claiming that the effort to overcome it is not a radical response to the current state of things but a failure to see the constitutive power of alienation for all of us. Instead of trying to overcome alienation and accede to an unalienated existence, it argues, we should instead redeem alienation as an existential and political program.
