Berlín, noviembre de 1938. Otto Silbermann es un empresario judío, un hombre que hasta la llegada al poder del Partido Nazi había sido un miembro respetado de la sociedad. Una mañana, aporrean la puerta de su piso: vienen a detenerlo, a despojarlo de sus bienes; quizá, incluso, a ejecutarlo.
