あらすじ・解説

No time to read? Get the main key insights from this summary of Uma Naidoo’s This Is Your Brain on Food in just a short listen.

A few key insights from Chapter 1:

  • In the 17th and 18th centuries, mentally ill people would be thrown in prisons, as their state was considered sinful. Now, they are moved to hospitals, where their thoughts and emotions are focused on and treated. Yet, the rest of their body is ignored.
  • Separate organs in the body can greatly influence one another, which means that the brain is not the only organ that affects mental health.
  • The most intense distant relationship in the body is the brain and the gut. They are physically connected despite being in different parts of the body. Chemicals produced by the gut are received by the brain and vice versa.
  • Depressed and anxious people lack a chemical called serotonin, and most of its receptors are found in the gut. The gut also has an important role in ensuring that the body’s response to stress is effective.
