Jacob and Wilhelm's first book of fairy tales, Children's and Household Tales, published in 1812, included 86 folktales and was an instant success. When a poor man's son shows great bravery in battle, he earns the king's daughter's hand in marriage. Unfortunate events ensue, though, involving crypts, snakes, and sinking ships. Dramatic music and sound effects highlight the dark turns. Laura Paton gives a straightforward performance without intrusive over-dramatization. Her playful pacing keeps the story flowing. With substantial acting experience, Paton knows how to give her characters distinct voices, too. Youngest listeners may find moments a bit scary, but in typical Brothers Grimm fashion, the good live happily ever after while the bad suffer and die.
