Originally published as a novel in 2007, the opening line of which is “Seemed harmless at first for Momma to keep Bunk’s amputated leg in the freezer.” Who’s There is probably best described as a humorous cross between Kesselring’s Arsenic and Old Lace and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Sister, Momma, Ivylee, and Bunk live on a chicken farm in the rural south. Sister maintains both the farm and the family. Each looks for love and each waits: Momma waits for her husband Bunk to return and claim his severed leg or for God to fetch her home; Ivylee waits for her imaginary lover, Mr. Robinson, and Sister waits for relief—relief from running the farm and maintaining the family. Each day they hold a memorial service for Bunk’s leg, which they otherwise keep in the freezer. Left mysteriously on their front porch is a rock with a note attached, which reads, “It’s me. I want to come back.” Each woman thinks the note for her.

When Meter Reader appears to read their meter, Momma decides he would make a good husband for one of her girls. Recently widowed, Meter Reader’s wife is on ice at the mortuary after having been accidentally chewed up by a wood chipper when the County was trimming the trees.

When Bunk lost his leg and his memory some years earlier, Sister had to forsake her education to take care of her family. To escape the drudgery, Sister has been having an affair with the chicken doctor.

Momma, whose life is more make believe than real, looks for answers by attending funerals whether she knows the deceased or not, by looking for “signs” in the unusual items that continue to appear in their yard, and by reading her Bible.

Suspected of brain damage as the result of a high fever, Ivylee, who is poetically-challenged, performs her poetry atop an old stove in the living room as she waits for her Mr. Robinson to come “whisk her away to her beautiful home in Miami.”

When Bunk set the living room on fire, he became “Precious” and was moved outside to the tool shed until he accidentally falls. With the bump to his head, the reason for the amnesia surfaces, and Bunk begins the process of putting their lives back together. When Bunk re-enters, Momma’s memory is stirred to the evening Bunk lost his leg and why. With tenderness Bunk shares the spiritual enlightenment he has received and convinces Momma they should bury the leg. In their most bizarre service, Momma and Bunk renew their vows; Ivylee and Meter Reader are wed; and Sister is told she can leave. Each person has opened their own door and found who’s there.
