Holding a Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University and post-doctoral fellowships from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the NIH-funded New York Obesity Research Center, Allison's illustrious career has made substantial contributions to public health. He has served as Distinguished Professor and Director of the NIH-funded Nutrition Obesity Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, further establishing his expertise and influence in the field.

Allison has authored over 660 scientific publications and received numerous accolades, including the Lilly Scientific Achievement Award from The Obesity Society, the Andre Mayer Award from the International Association for the Study of Obesity, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from the National Science Foundation.
