The Holy Spirit: A Voice Who Speaks For Us

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you.” John 14:26

We often have to distinguish and discern between two different sets of thoughts, two different sets of voices running through our minds. Once voice edifies, informs and inspires. The other mocks, ridicules and discourages.

Revelation 12:10 describes Satan as the accuser. The accuser is a bit like a prosecutor. It’s the voice of crippling guilt and shame. It’s the voice that says you ain’t nothing, you weren’t nothing, and you’ll never be nothing. It’s the voice that tells you to give up and give in. It’s the voice of surrender and defeat.

The voice of God in our lives, on the other hand, is the voice that advocates for us. It reminds us that we are God’s beloved children, God’s handcrafted master pieces. It reminds us that we are not forsaken. It encourages us to get up when we’ve fallen. It’s the voice that guides us on the path of redemption. It’s the voice that calls us to live in our highest possibilities and purposes.

We must always listen to the voice that speaks for us and follow is guidance.

    We Have to Try

“When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them” - Acts 16:10

Paul’s travels in the ancient world were filled with danger and uncertainty. In his travels he faced religious and political opposition that led to his being run out of town when he wasn’t beaten and arrested.

He and his peers also faced the physical dangers of travel that included their being ship wrecked, and stranded. There was always the possibility of encountering bandits and robbers. And they didn’t always know who would welcome them or where they would stay.

Paul had a vision. The group was convinced that it was from God. So they tried. With every setback and hardship, they kept trying.

There’s nothing easy about answering God’s individual or collective calls to us. There’s nothing easy about living into the vision God gives. But we have to try.

Some Things We Just Have to Carry…

“Jesus said to him, "Stand up, take your mat and walk." - John 5:8

The story of Jesus healing the paralytic is a little different from the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, found later in this same Gospel.

Lazarus, when he came out of the grave was able to remove his burial clothes and in a sense get a completely fresh start. The former paralytic was given the strength to carry his mat.

Some of us have done things or had things done to us that can’t be erased or forgotten. Some burdens can’t be left behind or abandoned. We can’t pretend they never happened.

Some things we just have to carry. The good news is that God will give us the strength to carry them, if we have to.

We don’t have to stay stuck. No matter our yesterdays, starting today, God equips, empowers, and inspires us to move in to the future that God is unfolding before us.
