    Miguel is a first generation college student and therefore, also a first generation athletic trainer. We connected with Miguel through social media and asked what topic or story he would like to share and the story of being a first generation college student was where we landed. In this episode, we discuss Miguel’s path of getting into college, finding the athletic training profession and then figuring out the next steps from there and beyond.


    Miguel shares his story about figuring out what was next, asking questions, and finding people that could help him along the way to end up where he is now and set his plans for the future. Miguel’s story is a great one and definitely inspirational in the way he figured out each step and continues to advance his career. It was great to talk to him and we hope you enjoy the episode.

    Dr. Brian Regan is a chiropractor and athletic trainer that has had an interesting journey in his career to this point. Brian started out his career in athletic training and helped build quite a sports medicine and performance program. After a few years in this role Brian got the itch to continue to build his skillset and become a different kind of clinician. Enter chiropractic school. After completing school, jobs weren’t just fitting and Brian entered the SSAT world again and there he is now while still being a practicing DC. In this episode we talk about Brian’s journey and how he got to where he is today. We get into the depth of building a sports medicine program and what he learned from that experience to diving deep into chiropractic. In this episode, Alexis talks with Greg about the importance of mental health not only in athletics but in general.     Dr. Chad Ashland is the Executive Director of the U.S. Council on Athlete’s Health and a huge advocate for the athletic training profession. Dr. Asplund has done a lot of work in his career in the collegiate setting along with in sports medicine clinics. In all of these roles, Dr. Asplund has highlighted how important athletic trainers are to sports and the care of active patients. In this episode we discuss what the U.S. Council on Athletes’ Health is and what they are doing to help athletes around the country and at all levels. This organization is focusing on getting the resources athletes and athletic departments need in order to prioritize an athlete’s physical and mental health.     Dr. Abigail Chew is working in a private clinic where she sees a full patient list and practices autonomously. We connected on social media and Dr. Chew was kind enough to share her story about working in this setting and how she ended up there. Entrepreneurship and private practice for athletic trainers are at an all-time high and will continue to grow. Dr. Chew shares the highlights of what it is like working in a private clinic and how that works with practice acts and licensure as well as just trying to establish herself in the community and really build up a patient group.


    Dr. Chew also shares some great and unique insight into working with patients with neurologic issues and how as an athletic trainer there is the opportunity to work in unique and potentially complex populations. This episode was filled with amazing insight into working on your own as an AT and everything that goes into the process to make that happen.
