“Have you ever spotted a flyer outside a grocery store featuring someone who makes wine, only to unexpectedly meet that person the following week and forge a friendship? That’s exactly what happened to me with Christopher. From the moment we met, it’s been nothing but good vibes and mutual respect. Christopher is a natural leader and community advocate, making a remarkable impact on the city with his positive influence and ability to drive forward no matter the circumstances. He's also someone I painted for my 2023 art grant project "Legends of the 7x7", commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission, as one of my 49 favorite San Franciscans. He’s a farmer, a community activist, a winemaker, a shop owner, an educator, and a talented dude.

Take a moment to listen as Chris shares his journey: growing up in Germany, his experiences living across the U.S. in places like Colorado, Texas, and Kentucky, his teenage troubles, moving to San Francisco, working his way up at American Apparel, and facing a high-profile legal battle due to racism. Hear about how he reevaluated his life goals, pursued a degree in horticulture, and launched The Two Eighty Project. Chris also delves into the positive impact of sharing resources, his efforts to improve San Francisco, and his wine shop, Friend of a Friend, in North Beach. Christopher’s story is incredibly inspiring and I’m grateful for the chance to connect with him over our shared love for this vibrant city.

“In the world of film making, I’ve somehow found myself as a Director. One thing I’ve learned about this role is that it’s very important to surround yourself with key-role collaborators that you 100% trust in order to uphold your creative vision - and dare I say - make your creative vision even better than you imagined it, once it’s finally transformed into a physical, real-life set. In that very important role of Production Designer, whose task that is to do so, Keri Shewmaker is the person for me. My forever go-to collaborator that helps me ensure my creative set visions are fulfilled. Together, when working, we fit like a glove. But beyond being a collaborator, she’s more importantly: my friend. The kind of friend I can never stop talking to when we’re in each other’s presence. One of the first times we hung out was at a music video film festival in Oakland ( our video won by the way, we beat Shannon and The Clams’ video… just saying ) and we spent around 3 hours after the event had ended, in the cold, babbling to one another and having a great time by ourselves after everyone else had left. I always tell people that story when I talk about Keri and every time I’m around her, that’s the same vibe we return to - just two buds babbling on, talking shit, and enjoying each other’s company. But beyond being a friend and collaborator, she’s a fascinating person and I’m hyped to have her on the pod to talk about her life. Sit back and listen to Keri talk about growing up as rural kid in the California Delta, moving to San Francisco for college and graduating with a sociology degree, unexpectedly finding her way into working in the film industry, what she loves about set design, growing out of being a musician and growing into being a filmmaker, working on the No Vacation music videos “Yam Yam” and “Days”, directing the HXXS music video “Last Days of Magic”, her fascination with miniatures, and much, much more. “What do you get when you combine Disco and Psychedelic? The answer is Discodelic. But what do you get when you combine Discodelic and San Francisco? I’ll tell you, you get the band Mild Universe! San Francisco’s Mild Universe is a dreamy dance-music band that combines funk, disco, jazz, and psychedelic music. Based in the city, the band formed in 2019 and is made up of a collective of musicians who all grew up in the Bay Area. For Episode 4 of Bedroom, I sat down with two members of Mild Universe: my personal friends, Sam Jones and Karina Alterman. Sit back and listen to Sam and Karina discuss the bands new album “Everything Must Change”, some behind the scenes stories of the new bops, the current status of the San Francisco music scene, and a lengthy session of Bedroom Banter. “Back when I was a teenager and I fell in love with art making, the form that initially captivated me was graffiti. In the small town of Sonoma where I grew up there wasn’t much of a graffiti scene but there was one gem among the rough... spraying and tagging the county, the one and only: Kel Troughton. I remember one week seeing a piece of his under a bridge in Glen Ellen and a couple days later seeing one at the local youth hang-out spot called “The Shop”. His skill level blew my teenage mind. Due to our age difference, I never really saw him much, so he sort of became this elusive-like Bigfoot character to me. There were signs of his presence around town, I’d learn little tidbits bits about him, but I never really chopped it up and hung out with him. Now that I’m older, I finally have had the chance to become friends with Kel and learn about all the magnificent qualities that he possesses - and guess what? The dude doesn’t disappoint, he’s still just as talented as ever. Sit back and listen to the big homie talk about growing up in Hawaii and moving to the Bay Area, meeting Stan Lee as a kid and recreating the art inside of his comic books, how he became obsessed with graffiti, the cultural importance of magazines pre-internet, getting involved with a friend’s butcher shop and starting a decade plus gig of being the shop’s official sign writer, going to school to study typography, being an educational bridge between the worlds of graffiti and typography, his involvement with the Letterform Archive and curating a graffiti collection for them, becoming a typography teacher at the Type West postgraduate program, having his first typeface drop on Future Fonts, the type foundry he established called “Overlap”, the bygone era of internet blogs, his fascination with “civilian graffiti”, his favorite type designers, as well as the importance of finding your own lane within a creative community and contributing to the scene. “DJ Basta, aka Nick Basta , was one of my earliest visual art idols. Growing up where we did in our little northern pocket of the Bay Area, Nick was somehow tapped-in to a larger cultural scene of the outlier arts. Things like Graffiti, Hip Hop, Reggae, Block Parties, they weren’t really big factors or pillars of where we came from, but somehow Nick learned about them and did what he does best: he taught us all and put us all on game. When I was a late-teenager, Nick was like this artistic and cultural messenger to me. He would go to the city and bring back little nuggets of cultural gold. Nick has always had this upper echelon taste and an extremely magnetic quality and and when you combine those two facets and add-in the special sauce of his willingness to teach and share, you get to experience someone who is wildly influential. Sit back and listen to this big homie talk about the beginning years of his art life in the North Bay, finding Graffiti, going to California College of the Arts, throwing block parties in Oakland, DJ’ing events for over a decade, transitioning from DJ’ing into producing beats, col2laborating with all sorts of musicians and emcees and singers, his involvement with his crews Macarthur Maze and The Electric Colors, having his music played at Golden State Warriors Games by fellow Macarthur Maze member DJ D Sharp, Macarthur Maze being featured on Sway’s Radio Show and having their work on the billboards of Times Square, the Roots and Branches record box project, Nick and I’s cassette tape collaboration projects “QQQ” and “222”, as well as just a plethora of wisdom and good vibes.
