Non-musical history for today: 1969 – Senator Ted Kennedy crashed his car into a tidal pond at Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. In 1970, a judicial inquest concluded that Kennedy and Kopechne had not intended to take the ferry and that Kennedy had intentionally turned toward the bridge, operating his vehicle negligently, if not recklessly, and at too high a speed for the hazard which the bridge posed in the dark. The judge stopped short of recommending charges, and a grand jury convened on April 6, returning no indictments. On May 27, a Registry of Motor Vehicles hearing resulted in Kennedy's driver's license being suspended for sixteen months after the crash. It ruined Ted's chances of running for President on more than one occasion. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for July 19. Non-musical history for today: 1925 – Adolf Hitler published Mein Kampf. An autobiographical tome of his views, beliefs, and plan to become an a-hole. And, it came true. I'm sure a certain Cheeto-looking guy thinks it's a grand volume, indeed. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for July 18. Non-musical history for today: 1935 – The world's first parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I thought maybe this was where Lucas "Cool Hand Luke" Jackson cut the heads off of them in the film, but that was set in Florida and filmed in California. So, no. Now, they're switching to app-based meters. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for July 16. Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza. Non-musical history for today: 1838 – Ralph Waldo Emerson delivered the Divinity School Address at Harvard Divinity School, discounting Biblical miracles and declaring Jesus a great man, but not God. The Protestant community reacts with outrage. I, on the other hand, am quite intrigued. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for July 15. Non-musical history for today: 1881 – American outlaw Billy the Kid was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in the Maxwell House at Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Wait... he was shot whilst drinking coffee? I "kid!" During the decades following his death, legends grew that BtK had survived, and several men claimed to be him. Billy the Kid remains one of the most notorious figures from the era, whose life and likeness have been frequently dramatized in Western popular culture.
