  • 'Superbad' with Nick Duffy, Ken Hagen, Carla Cummins, and Kevin Stoller

    In this episode, we’re diving into the wildly popular teen comedy Superbad — one of the most iconic (and ridiculous) high school movies out there. As part of our series on school-related films, we’re looking at what Superbad got right about the student experience, what it totally blew out of proportion, and why it still hits home for so many people. Superbad follows two inseparable best friends, Seth and Evan, as they navigate their final days of high school — chasing parties, popularity, and one last shot at leaving their mark before graduation. Beneath all the chaos and crude humor is a surprisingly real look at teenage friendship, insecurity, and the awkward (and often hilarious) leap into adulthood — a sneak peek at one of the hot takes from our episode! We unpack the awkwardness, social dynamics, and over-the-top moments — and ask what it all says about how pop culture portrays school life. It's part movie breakdown, part education lens, and all about what we can learn (and laugh at) when Hollywood takes on high school. What does it say about student relationships, social dynamics, and the overall high school experience? How do movies like this shape the way we think about education — and how students think about themselves? We’re not taking it too seriously (it is Superbad, after all), but we are looking at what educators and school leaders can learn from how pop culture reflects — and distorts — the real student experience. Takeaways: Superbad, like many teen comedies, exaggerates for laughs, but it also influences how students, parents, and even educators view the high school experience.Behind the chaos and crude humor, Superbad highlights a very real truth: students crave meaningful friendships and validation during a time of major life transitions.While Superbad doesn’t show much of the classroom environment, it reminds us how much of student life happens in between classes — in the social spaces. It's a good reminder that learning environments need to be designed for connection, mobility, and authenticity.Laughing at the awkwardness and absurdity of adolescence helps us connect to students’ experiences. Movies like Superbad give us an opportunity to talk about real issues — like peer pressure, insecurity, and self-discovery — in a more approachable way. His recent experience includes multiple new high schools, master planning and implementation for several districts, a new performing arts center for a school district, and a re- imagined visitor experience at a performance venue for a university. He also led the transformation of a university’s center for advanced engineering.
