Girls Will Be Girls follows 16 year-old Mira as she first discovers sexual desire while attending a strict boarding school in the Himalayas, but her coming-of-age is disrupted by her mother who never got to come of age herself. Director/writer Shuchi Talati shares how she was delicately able to portray teenage sexuality, why certain crew members had a lot of tips for a certain stuffed animal scene, and their emotional experience screening the film in India for the first time.

Hot damn, this is a fun one! Our friends at the Standard Deviant Brewing Co invited us to record on location at their 7th annual chili cook off, and as regular patrons, we can say without a doubt it’s one of the most fun events of the year. You’ll meet all ten of the competing teams, learn about their secret recipes, and the inspiration behind their costumes (true to SF, we saw everything from ass cheeks to #FreeLuigi).

Plus Erin and Ange catch you up on their January shenanigans, including laughing their assess off at multiple SF Sketchfest shows, closing out a karaoke bar to Sinead O’Connor on a Monday night, and recovering from a hysterectomy (#MiddleAgedWomen). Be sure to guess who you think will win, because we also bring you the exciting conclusion to the chili cook off, including some unique awards that you won’t want to miss. Honestly, this episode encapsulates why we still love San Francisco. Cheers!

  • Sundance 2025 - Third Act and Heightened Scrutiny
    2025/02/12

    Send us a text

Welcome to our third and final episode for Sundance 2025, featuring two very timely feature length documentaries.

Third Act is a documentary that follows the life of Asian American artist and activist Robert A. Nakamura (aka the godfather of Asian American media), while grappling with his recent Parkinson's diagnosis. We were joined by filmmaker (and Robert's son) Tadashi Nakamura and one of the subjects of the film/his mother, Karen Ishizuka, to discuss making this film as a family, the universal nature of grief and loss, and Tad's son Prince's potential run for president in 2040 (jk but also not).

Heightened Scrutiny follows civil rights lawyer Chase Strangio's courtroom battle against anti-trans laws, while exposing the media's role in impacting public perception of transgender rights. Director Sam Feder shares his rush to get this film out as soon as possible, the importance of being able to give a voice to children in a conversation about them, and how this film is his way of showing the younger generations that we tried/are trying.

  • Sundance 2025 - Vox Humana and Rains Over Babel
    2025/02/06

    Send us a text

Welcome to the 2025 Sundance Film Festival! This week we're going international with two films that are an homage to their homeland.

Vox Humana is a beautifully stylized short film about an eccentric zoologist that gets hired to communicate with a naked man found wandering in the woods after a major earthquake. Director Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan and producer Hannah Schierbeek share the importance of indigenous Filipino stories being represented in cinema, the disconnect between modern living and the environment, and how they were at the mercy of mother nature in the Cordillera mountains.

Rains Over Babel is an exciting feature length film that brings Dante's Inferno into a tropical steam punk world inspired by Cali, Colombia. Director Gala del Sol shares her love of Latin American magical realism, being able to create the queer film that she always wanted to see, and meeting with an exorcist priest during the pandemic.

    2025/01/31

    Send us a text

It's Sundance 2025, and we are kicking the festival off with two of our favorites!

Remember Me is a short film that shows what happens when a woman who jut got dumped, turned 40, and returned home to take care of her dying father decides she's ready to go on a date. We are joined by director/writer/star Claire Titelman who shares how she found inspiration from the incredible dress she wears in the film (and also where to buy it!), and the story behind the hilarious karaoke scene that wasn't originally in the script.

Didn't Die is a feature length film about a podcaster who tries to maintain her dwindling audience in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. We're joined by director/co-writer Meera Menon and one of the film's stars Kiran Deol to discuss finding hope in dark times, creating relatable characters through improv, and how representation for brown women is complicated.

Samantha Curley is an activist and producer whose most recent film, Union, documents a group of Amazon workers that embark on an unprecedented campaign to unionize their warehouse in Staten Island, New York. She shares how the film found its origins in trolling Jeff Bezos's mansion in Beverly Hills, how the crew was both inspired by and part of the activism, and how race and class dynamics come into play when institutional powers attempt to suppress our ability to unite.
