  • Carmen Perez is an American activist and Chicana feminist who has worked on issues of civil rights including mass incarceration, women's rights and gender equity, violence prevention, racial healing and community policing. She is the President and CEO of The Gathering for Justice, a nonprofit founded by Harry Belafonte which is dedicated to ending child incarceration and eliminating the racial disparities in the criminal justice system. Ana Sheila Victorino guest co-hosts this episode and speaks to Carmen about her vision for a just world. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it is Also Mental Health Awareness month. Our friend Melissa Parra, Community Engagement Manager at Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley, joins us to speak about the intersection of mental health and cancer and how she works to connect people to resources so they do not have to face cancer alone. Melissa is with Cancer Support Community, an organization that provides comprehensive services—including support groups, individual counseling, and healthy lifestyle programs such as yoga and meditation, healing through art and movement and lastly, references and referrals connecting folks to resources.
