Cities and Memory - remixing the world

著者: Cities and Memory
  • サマリー

  • Cities and Memory remixes the world, one sound at a time - a global collaboration between artists and sound recordists all over the world. The project presents an amazingly-diverse array of field recordings from all over the world, but also reimagined, recomposed versions of those recordings as we go on a mission to remix the world. What you'll hear in the podcast are our latest sounds - either a field recording from somewhere in the world, or a remixed new composition based solely on those sounds. Each podcast description tells you more about what you're hearing, and where it came from. There are more than 6,000 sounds featured on our sound map, spread over more than 120 countries and territories. The sounds cover parts of the world as diverse as the hubbub of San Francisco’s main station, traditional fishing women’s songs at Lake Turkana, the sound of computer data centres in Birmingham, spiritual temple chanting in New Taipei City or the hum of the vaporetto engines in Venice. You can explore the project in full at http://www.citiesandmemory.com

"I was inspired to use depth and space to frame both the ambient atmosphere and the composition; to have layers of time and memory intermingling, manifesting a narrative of sorts.

"Another aspect is that we hear the sound recordist, which I really like, and that presence adds another mysterious layer to the story."

River in Otterton, England reimagined by Eulipion Corps.

"My partner is a scientist who studies reindeer, so I've been lucky enough to spend a fair amount of time with these strange animals and the people who herd them. The relationship between the deer and the herders is unique in the realm of human-animal relationships, more akin to symbiosis than to any definition of domestication.

"The crunching texture of the footsteps through snow suggested a rhythmic element to me, so I built a track around that, with various herder calls processed and layered throughout, and a Mongolian jaw harp and hengereg drum to tie things together."

Mongolian reindeer herding reimagined by Kenolith.

The River Otter gently flows over a bed of stones in Otterton, England, accompanied by the chirping of summer birdsong, and a gentle breeze blowing through the grasses.
