From Lemons to Limoncello

  • They say we should make lemonade when life gives us lemons, but I think we can do so much more than that. Adding a little sugar just masks the sour of life, but if we take the time to distill all of the flavors of our experiences—with honesty and empathy—we can completely transform our lives into something as bold and exquisite as a glass of limoncello. I hope you'll join me each week on 'From Lemons to Limoncello,' because the only thing better than creating a great recipe for life is sharing it with friends.

  • EP 40 - Breaking Age Barriers: Insights on People over 50, with "Openly Gray"
    2024/11/17

Are you over 50 years old? If so, do you ever feel invisible in life, at work, or in the media? Do you care about someone over 50?

According to the Harvard Business Review, older consumers contribute more than half of consumer spending in the US, yet only 5–10% of marketing budgets are aimed at winning them over. While 46% of the U.S. adult population is age 50-plus, a recent AARP study found that only 15% of online images containing adults include people this age. Feeling overlooked at work, by the opposite sex, and even among younger generations, people 50 and up are also often ignored by brands. Openly Gray wants to change that.

In this episode, we chat with the dynamic team from Openly Gray, a marketing firm specializing in the often-overlooked 50 and up age demographic. Our guests are:

    • Lee Brody, Co-Founder/President
    • Lee St. James, Co-Founder/Creative Director
    • Brooke Stachyra, Partner/Client Success

Each of these entrepreneurial spirits saw an opportunity to help businesses tap into this market, which, according to AARP, is responsible for more than half of consumer spending in the United States alone. By the very nature of what they do, they’re also changing society’s perceptions. And since this age group is living longer and working longer, their work is crucial to the way people in this age group are seen and valued.

    In This Episode, We Cover:

    • Why businesses should market their products to the 50+ population
    • The importance of combating misperceptions about any age group
    • The value that older employees bring to organizations
    • The amazing exchange that can happen when younger employees and older employees mentor each other
    • Misperceptions about the potential people have in their 50s and beyond
    • What it feels like to be undervalued when we have so much expertise to offer in the workplace
    • How hiring younger/less experienced employees may save companies up front, but costs them more in the long run
    • Why painting with a broad brush/making assumptions about ANY age group, young or old, hurts society and businesses
    • Advice for people under 50 on why they should change their perceptions about people over 50

Whether you ARE over 50, you care about someone who is, or you're a business that's curious about this untapped market - this episode is for you.
