July 24th 1989. Rescue helicopters scanned the rugged terrain of Mount Asahidake in Japan’s Daisetsuzan National Park, searching for two missing hikers. They were found quickly thanks to a massive SOS sign made from birch trees. But when questioned, the hikers insisted they hadn’t built it.
