  • Children's rights where wants become Needs for children with disabilities
    2022/04/07
Every society expects that its children will grow up to be capable and responsible citizens who contribute to the well-being of their communities. Many children are denied the rights that would enable them to survive and develop to their potential. Children cope daily with violence and abuse. Some work long hours at jobs that are damaging to their health and education. Too many are denied access to school, and suffer preventable diseases and malnutrition. Environmental damage takes the largest toll on children; discrimination denies many their basic rights. The denial of basic rights is not only the cause of personal suffering; it also sows the seeds of political and social unrest. Rights issues touch everyone, everywhere. Children’s right is including their right to association with both parents, human identity as well as the basic needs for physical protection, food, universal state-paid education, health care, and criminal laws appropriate for the age and development of the child, equal protection of the child's civil rights, and freedom. Also Children’s rights are human rights. Children must be treated with equality, respect and dignity, not because they are "the future" or the "adults of tomorrow", but because they are human beings today. All humans are born inherent with fundamental freedoms and rights. A child with disability might need an orbit reader, braille machine or any other equipment that can assist them in their learning but because of how they are somehow expansive, then we consider them as wants instead of being needs. In absence of providing such materials because we consider them as something not so needed, children with disabilities will end up in a struggle in their education.  Without knowing that it is their needs though some of them might be taken as wants in some eyes of viewers.  Hence school staff while planning to support the education of children with disabilities in mainstream schools or special schools or inclusive schools, better to noticed that there is where what we consider as a wants becomes a needs for children with disabilities or learning disabilities and plan how we can meet those needs so that they will be able to learn effectively like others do. • Learning difficulties/ Disabilities and why some children don't excel in some subjects
    2022/03/09
If your child has trouble with schoolwork and learning, it can be both frustrating for you and your child. Your child may feel unintelligent, and you may feel that your child is not trying his best. However, there can be a hidden factor that explains why your child is struggling. Your child may have one of several types of learning disabilities. Learning disability is a neurological disorder that affects one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using spoken or written language. The disability may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or to do mathematical calculations. Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning problems which are primarily the result of visual or hearing impairments, physical or intellectual impairments, emotional disturbance or environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages. Generally speaking, people with learning disabilities are of average or above average intelligence. There often appears to be a gap between the individual’s potential and actual achievement. This is why learning disabilities are referred to as “hidden disabilities”: the person looks perfectly “normal” and seems to be a very bright and intelligent person, yet may be unable to demonstrate the skill level expected from someone of a similar age. A learning disability doesn’t disfigure or leave visible signs that would invite others to be understanding or offer support. A learning disability cannot be cured or fixed; it is a lifelong challenge. However, with appropriate support and intervention, people with learning disabilities can achieve success in school, at work, in relationships, and in the community. “Learning disabilities” is an umbrella term describing a number of specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia and dysgraphia etc.

  • Episode 4: Helping children who have speech difficulties in an inclusive classroom
    2022/02/01
Talk is very important for learning. In the classroom, about 70% of the teaching and learning is done through talking. The teacher can talk to the students. The students can talk to the teacher. Good teaching and learning depend on a balance between these interactions. If the teacher talks all the time it is not good. It is important for the students to talk to the teacher, to ask and answer questions. It is also very important for the children to talk to each other by working in pairs and in small groups. In your lessons, how much time do you spend talking? How much time do the children spend talking to you? How much time do the children spend talking to each other?  It is very important for a child’s development that they learn to talk about their ideas and feelings. Also, by encouraging talk in the classroom a teacher can then assess the progress of the student. If a child is having difficulty, a teacher can then adapt the teaching methods to help the child improve. Good teaching encourages children to talk to their teacher and each other.
