Dopo appena un mese di guerra, la Francia è già sull'orlo del baratro. L'invasione tedesca sta andando esattamente secondo le previsioni del Piano Schlieffen, e l'esercito francese è in ritirata. La battaglia decisiva si combatte lungo un fronte di 300 chilometri, che passa non lontano da Parigi, sulle rive di un fiume che sta per passare alla storia.
