  • My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss. My goal as a Torah educator is not merely to teach my students my OWN hashkafah. Rather, my goal is to equip them with the foundations, the methodological training, and the tools which will enable them to arrive at their OWN understanding of Judaism and cultivate their OWN relationship with Hashem and His Torah. This podcast is devoted to the shiurim I give which are geared specifically towards that end. As such, the range of topics covered here will be diverse. There will be shiurim on Jewish philosophy, Chumash methodology, aggadic midrashim, maybe even some non-Jewish philosophy as well. Merriam-Webster defines "laboratory" as a place providing opportunity for experimentation, observation, or practice in a field of study. I call this podcast "Machshavah Lab" because this is where we will conduct Torah "experiments" by exploring questions, texts, and ideas in an effort to develop our machshavah in a "hands on," exploratory, firsthand manner.

  • Avos 2:1 - Contemplate Three Things and You Won't Come to Sin
    2024/10/11

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length: 1 hour 21 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (10/11/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women (rescheduled to Friday morning, Erev Yom ha'Kippurim), we took up the final clause of the first mishnah in chapter 2 because it mentions the concept that all our deeds our written in a book. I chose this because I hoped it would shed light on all the book-talk at around this time of year, and if not, then at least it'll be instrumental in teshuvah and avoidance of transgression. Turns out, I was right on at least one score!

  • INCOMPLETE SHIUR: Rosh ha'Shanah 5785 - The Sweet Secret of Ha'Melech ha'Misphat
    2024/10/02

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length: 1 hour 16 minutes
Synopsis: This Erev Rosh ha'Shanah morning (10/2/24), I gave an incomplete shiur on the phrase "ha'Melech ha'Mishpat" with which we conclude the 11th berachah of the Amidah during the Aseres Ymei Teshuvah. Last year I wrote 3/4ths of an article on this topic - everything but the main idea, which didn't come together in time. This year, I had planned on finishing the article in time to post on Erev RH, but that hasn't happened yet. So I decided to just go through all the sources in shiur in hopes that the idea would emerge. DID the idea emerge? Not quite. But we definitely have a LOT of food for thought, and by sharing the shiur, my hope is that someone will help me to discover the "sweet secret" alluded to by the Ritva as explained by R' Manoach.

  • Nitzavim/Vayeilech: Teshuvah as a Ledge
    2024/09/27

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length of article: 2 pages
Length of audio: 7 minutes 22 seconds
Synopsis: This is the audio version of the 2-page article I wrote and published on rabbischneeweiss.substack.com/ on 9/27/24, titled: Nitzavim/Vayeilech: Teshuvah as a Ledge. We're about to enter the Aseres Ymei Teshuvah (Ten days of Repentance) once again, and I find myself asking the same question I ask every year: Is teshuvah really as easy as Moshe Rabbeinu claims?
