  • 13 -What Works In The Cannabis Industry with Restart CBD's Shayda Torabi
    2022/05/20

What Works In The Cannabis Industry

In this episode of On The Map podcast, your host Lee Caraher talks to the co-founder and CEO of Restart CBD, Shayda Torabi.

    A Women-Owned, Sister-Owned Texas Cannabis Brand

Restart CBD is a women-owned, sister-owned cannabis brand that’s headquartered in Shayda’s hometown of Austin, TX. They are about to celebrate four years in business in 2022, and last year they were voted the best CBD brand and local dispensary by several Austin publications. The best part? Restart CBD ships nationwide and has an authoritative presence in their space.

    The Origins of Restart CBD

Shayda shares that she fell into this type of business somewhat accidentally, but she always had a passion for entrepreneurship. When she left college, she joined a small tech company that grew from just 13 employees to over 600 over the course of six years. This was the first time, from a scrappy perspective, Shayda experienced serious business growth. During her mid-twenties, crisis struck when she was in a serious car accident and broke her hip in more than one place. This accident welcomed chronic pain into Shayda’s life. This is when cannabis entered her sphere – though starting out, she was hesitant. It was actually Shayda’s mother who suggested she use CBD to deal with this chronic pain. This impacted Shayda positively in many ways; for one thing, she could turn to something like CBD rather than narcotic medications or steroid injections to help with her pain.

    Leveraging Different Perspectives to Educate

Shayda shares that she and her sister are two sides of the same coin when it comes to running their business. Shayda had experience with cannabis, but her sister was a sponsored athlete, so cannabis use was off of the table for her. Both sisters are able to tell their stories through their brand from very different perspectives. Shayda offers her car accident story as insight into using CBD for pain management, while her sister is able to educate their audience from an overall health and wellness approach. Together, they reach a massive audience from all walks of life.

CBD and cannabis really helped Shayda navigate her wellness journey and ultimately, changed her life for the better. She was able to have a new lease on life after her accident, thanks to these products. Shayda shares that when she began her business, it was just a side hustle. Very quickly, Restart CBD became very popular locally in Austin. Shayda and her team leaned into educating their customers and opening more minds to the use of cannabinoids for health and wellness, which is part of how Restart CBD put themselves ‘on the map’.

Thinking Global From the Start and Expanding Your Business Internationally

In this episode of On The Map podcast, your host Lee Caraher talks with Wendy Pease.

    Acquiring a Translation Business

Wendy is the Owner and President of Rapport International, based out of MetroWest Boston, MA and Lincoln, NE. Rapport International provides translation and interpretation services as well as spoken solutions, multilingual marketing, and more. Wendy shares that she bought this business after she became exhausted from the corporate rat race. She was totally new to the translation space but she loved the idea of acquiring a business that taught and explored culture. She realized quickly that the business she acquired was a diamond in the rough -- this business existed before things like Google Translate existed. The business responded well to marketing, so Wendy put in the hard work to build relationships with the company’s existing client base. She networked and built relationships with cold leads, and ultimately, Wendy’s inkling was right; you have to be willing to put on the sales and marketing hat full time when you first acquire a business. It’s key that as the business owner, you explore and engage with your existing client base and also build a new network to connect with.

Focus on Building Your Network Opportunities

Marketing and networking opportunities increase every single day. If you feel your business fills a need, you absolutely have to dedicate a serious amount of time to marketing. If you don’t get your solution in front of people, it will never take off. Wendy shares that when she first began attending networking and marketing events, no one really knew what a translation service did at a high level. Now, especially after the creation of Google Translate, there is an entire industry around these types of services. Wendy’s business would never have grown at the rate it did had she not continued to network and market consistently to build her company’s authority in the space.

Plan to Go Global from Day One

Rapport International markets all over the world and has clients from all over the globe. About ten years ago, when people started adding cities to their social media accounts, SEO made it so that Rapport International popped into local internet searches near Boston, MA. Back then, people cared a lot about whether or not a business they worked with was close to them, geographically speaking. Nowadays, that matters less than ever. Wendy shares that Rapport wants to expand their global offerings even more to attract more clients from different places. Market entry when trying to expand your company globally isn’t clear cut and requires very informed marketing strategies, so take calculated steps when expanding your international marketing. You should be planning to expand your business internationally from the beginning -- it’s extremely difficult to backtrack if you didn’t prepare for it well in advance. Don’t forget to take advantage of government grants if you want to expand internationally; the government wants to encourage businesses to work across borders, so do yourself a favor and look into that as you plan your business expansion.

  • 11 - A Team of Global Wellness Facilitators with Remote Team Wellness's Tarin Calmeyer
    2022/04/29

Exponential Growth with LinkedIn, Honing the Audience & Partnerships

In this episode of On The Map podcast, your host Lee Caraher speaks with Tarin Calmeyer.

Tarin is a Virtual Corporate Wellness Specialist with Remote Team Wellness. Tarin has been a holistic wellness practitioner for over a decade. She explains that she didn’t love running a clinical practice, but she did have a passion for wellness consulting, especially in the hospitality industry, so that’s what she decided to pursue. After the pandemic started, she realized she needed to offer her services remotely. Throughout that process, she and her team realized that the corporate wellness space wasn’t very supportive of employees’ needs. Tarin then began calling upon other wellness facilitators globally in order to improve corporate wellness across the board. Once enough businesses began asking for her support, Tarin realized there was true business potential in her work. When they started, Remote Team Wellness offered four programs. After growing very quickly, they now offer fifty programs.

    Exponential Growth

Tarin and Lee discuss how Remote Team Wellness grew exponentially. Tarin explains that when they started, they immediately began in the marketing trenches. They started their outreach on LinkedIn but needed to refine their target as they worked. It took time for them to realize that their ideal prospects were team leaders across various verticals.

    Honed the Audience

Tarin shares that they started their outreach by targeting executives, but quickly realized the right audience was the people who were more in touch with their teams on a daily basis. Remote Team Wellness’s client base has been built very organically, especially through strategic partnerships with other wellness groups and companies. A lot of their clientele has been built through these partnerships and collaborations, Tarin explains.

    Email is Key

Tarin and her team have also built a robust email list of around 5,000. Email is the way that prospects actually let you into their sphere, and combining email with strategic outreach is one of the ways that Remote Team Wellness has built their authority and influence. From the beginning, it has been their goal to improve the lives and wellness of employees within numerous corporate spaces.

Partnerships are Instrumental to Fast Growth

Lee and Tarin also discuss how you can build a business off of LinkedIn and strategic partnerships. This is the model that Remote Team Wellness followed, which has seen immense success for them. Lee stresses the importance of finding your true audience and refining that process as you learn. This, combined with carefully executed strategic partnerships, is how Tarin and her team began their business journey. This strategy is one of the ways that Remote Team Wellness grew so successfully and put itself ‘on the map.’
