  • Billieve: Texans Preview With Scott Barzilla From Battle Red Blog
    2024/10/04
The Buffalo Bills will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they travel to Houston, Texas Sunday afternoon to take on the Houston Texans in a matchup of squads with Super Bowl aspirations. To get you ready for the game, on this week’s episode of the Billieve podcast, we're joined by Scott Barzilla, who covers the Houston Texans for the SB Nation website, Battle Red Blog. While the Bills (3-1) have been one of the NFL's powerhouse teams over the last five seasons, the Texans burst onto the scene last year as QB C.J. Stroud enjoyed a tremendous rookie season, leading Houston to the AFC South title and a Wild Card round win over the Cleveland Browns. This year, the sledding hasn't been as easy through four weeks, as the Texans (3-1) have had to rally late to earn wins over the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Jacksonville Jaguars while getting trounced by the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Barzilla discusses the state of the Texans, including how Stroud has yet to take that next step forward in his development into an elite QB, and how Houston has done its best to surround Stroud with elite offensive playmakers (WRs Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and Stefon Diggs, and RB Joe Mixon). He also shares insights into how Diggs is fitting in since being acquired from Buffalo, the type of offense head coach DeMeco Ryans and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik have tried to install this year, and why, despite the presence of several first-round draft picks, Houston's offensive line has struggled mightily with penalties. We also explore how the Texans' run defense has been susceptible to allowing opposing running backs to run wild, which should be a good omen for Bills RB James Cook. We explore how Houston, which is holding QBs to a league-low 57.5% completion percentage for only 161 passing yards per game, has been able to take away their opponents' passing game, why Barzilla is concerned that Josh Allen will be able to exploit the Texans' secondary, and why Allen should be able to enjoy success connecting on both deep passes and slant patterns. We close by offering up score predictions as the Bills look to pick up another crucial AFC victory over a Texans squad that has struggled to find consistency this year. • Jamie D & Big Newt: It's all Big Newt's fault
    2024/10/02
The Buffalo Bills laid an egg against the Ravens on Sunday Night Football, and had some of their deficiencies exposed. Big Newt said it's all his fault. But there's another big game that lies ahead against the Houston Texans. Hosts Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton take a look at the game and discuss what specifically went wrong, while assuring the listeners that it's not time to panic. Among the problems they assessed are the safety play, injuries forcing backup players to play too many snaps, and a Ravens team that was just too physical for the Bills. Where the hosts break from a number of Bills fans is that they don't place blame on the coaches. Despite two specific situations in which coaching decisions went awry, neither D'Amico or Newton believe those were cause for the loss. Looking ahead, they talk about their excitement for the upcoming game against the Texans. Whether it be the Stefon Diggs storyline or their excitement about watching a great, young QB in C.J. Stroud, their ferver for the next opponent is palpable. They also pose a question: Are you able to appreciate great players and/or performances on opposing teams, or do you just want the Bills to win? • Billieve: Ravens Preview With Kyle Phoenix From Baltimore Beatdown
    2024/09/28
The Buffalo Bills kick off a crucial stretch of three straight road games on Sunday night, taking on the Baltimore Ravens in a matchup of squads with Super Bowl aspirations. To get you ready for the game, on this week’s episode of the Billieve podcast, we're joined by Kyle Phoenix, the managing editor of Baltimore Beatdown, the SB Nation website dedicated to covering the Baltimore Ravens. This is Buffalo’s second trip to Baltimore in the last three seasons, with the Bills prevailing 23-20 back on Oct. 2 of the 2022 NFL season. While the Bills (3-0) are undefeated and riding high heading into this Sunday Night Football clash, the Ravens (1-2) have struggled to find consistency in the early going, losing one-score games to the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders before holding off the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. Phoenix discusses the state of the Ravens, a team that, much like Buffalo, has experienced plenty of regular-season success but hasn't been able to get past the Chiefs in the playoffs. Phoenix shares how a banged-up Baltimore offensive line could spell trouble for Lamar Jackson and the offense, and could serve as a prime opportunity for Greg Rousseau, Von Miller and Buffalo's pass rush to set the edge and apply pressure on Jackson. We break down why Derrick Henry has been a valuable addition to Baltimore's ground game, how the Bills, with their five defensive back set, have excelled at limiting the damage teams do on the ground, how veteran LT Ronnie Stanley has played a key role in setting up Baltimore's rushing success, and why the Bills need to force Jackson into must-pass scenarios. We also explore what potential gameplan the Ravens could employ to try and slow down Josh Allen and the high-octane Bills offense, give DB Kyle Hamilton his kudos as a unique defensive weapon who can lineup anywhere and cause chaos on the field, dissect why Baltimore has been susceptible to surrendering touchdowns when the opposition enters the red zone, and suggest why TE Dalton Kincaid and WR Khalil Shakir could be in line for a big day in the passing game. We close by offering up score predictions as the Bills look to pick up another crucial AFC victory over a Ravens team that is one of the most dangerous squads in the conference. • Jamie D & Big Newt: Prime time domination and expectations
    2024/09/25
Hosts Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton discuss the Buffalo Bills dismantling of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football. But their analysis runs deeper than surface-level kudos for a dominant performance. They go deeper, crediting the organization's continuity with creating depth through lengthy player development periods. Look no further than the defensive performances of late draft picks and undrafted free agents, such as CBs Christian Benford, Cam Lewis, Ja'Marcus Ingram, and others, including LB Matt Milano, and rookie DE Javon Solomon--who had his first career sack. They turn their sights to the next prime time game on Sunday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens. D'Amico and Newton believe that this will be a tougher test than the Ravens record indicates, and break down how the Baltimore offense will likely attack the Bills defense. Other topics include: The elite efficiency of QB Josh Allen, who the national media is strongly touting for MVP. Which of the young Bills stars are most important to extend first, when given the choice of Benford, DE Greg Rousseau, RB James Cook, or WR Khalil Shakir. Strong disagreement between the hosts when the topic of of Gabe Davis' contract on the concept of personal reward vs. team success. The next three games and what needs to happen for the Bills to position themselves for a successful season. The strangeness of which QBs beyond Allen are having the most noteworthy seasons.
