Digital systems in ports help to boost efficiency and cut emissions by eliminating time consuming paperwork and opportunities for human error. Nuno Nunes, Associate Partner and VP Americas at HPC Hamburg Port Consulting joins host Gary Howard to explore the topic and the beneficial impacts Maritime Singles Windows and Port Community Systems have beyond the port environment.

Tune in to hear about the economic and geopolitical changes brought about by closer trade relationships supported by digital systems, and how this can strengthen regional stability. Nunes also speaks on the benefits to shipping of a more streamlined process for port calls and a more predictable voyage for seafarers.

With an eye to the future, Nunes discusses how these systems can be built for interoperability and flexibility, and the value of regular reviews of a port's needs and its systems' capabilities in order to maintain efficiency and identify new opportunities.

In the fifth, and final, part of our shipping market outlook series we are focusing on the shipbuilding sector with Maritime Strategies International (MSI) Managing Director Adam Kent.

Speaking to the Seatrade Maritime Podcast he says, “Newbuilding contracting in 2024 was exceptional. It's probably going to go down as the second highest ever year of contracting with around 125 million gross tonnage ordered over the course of 12 months.”

The tanker sector was unexpectedly weak in the fourth quarter of 2024 and faces a growing supply of tonnage and slower demand growth this year.

Dry bulk shipping overall enjoyed a better year than expected in 2024, however Q4 saw a sharp dip in market fortunes, so where are we headed in 2025?
