このコンテンツについて

Welcome to the Shady Lawyer Podcast, the world's premier legal podcast for the lawyer, law student, and layperson, alike. I am your host, Craig Jackson, and I am a mediator/lawyer who practices in Grapevine, Texas. Prior to launching this show, I did some real soul-searching in hopes of determining whether I could start a podcast about the law that is (a) as entertaining as it is informative and (b) useful to lawyers and laypeople alike. Well, my gut has assured me that it's impossible, but we're gonna let it rip and take a stab at creating a show that is not your parents' boring, missionary position only legal podcast. We hope you will give us a chance. It may not be great, but you've done worse. You can learn more at shadylawyer.com. Brought to you by JacksonMediations.com.2024 経済学

  • Episode 3: Stripping Down the Stigma of Burnout with Jim Dolan, the Lawyer Whisperer
    2025/01/13

In this week’s off-the-rails episode of The Shady Lawyer Podcast, we sit down with therapist Jim Dolan—a man whose father was (no joke) a bona fide hit man and lifelong criminal.

We talk about the dark side of the legal profession, including lawyer burnout, depression, and anxiety, and how Jim’s…unusual…upbringing shaped his perspective on mental health.

But wait—there’s more! We also dish on Candy Barr, the legendary Dallas stripper, and how her story intersects with the world of crime, law, and maybe a bit of scandal.

Buckle up. This episode’s got everything: contract killers, exotic dancers, and tips to keep your mental health from going up in smoke.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Burnout & Depression – Why lawyers are prime targets for chronic stress and how Jim helps them dodge the proverbial bullets. Oh yeah, and we all suffer from varying degrees of imposter syndrome (duh).
    2. Growing Up with a Hit Man Dad – Hear how Jim’s father’s life of crime influenced Jim’s insights into fear, secrecy, and the importance of therapy. Of course, no discussion of old school Dallas criminals would be complete without mentioning Jack Ruby, the Carousel Club, and sacking Candy Barr’s groceries.
    3. Actionable Tips – What steps you can take today to keep your mental health from bottoming out like a shady 3 a.m. bar tab.

    Where to Find Jim Dolan:

    • Visit jimdolantherapy.com to learn more about Jim’s practice, especially if you’re an attorney with a stress level high enough to scare off the bailiff.

  • Episode 2: From Harvard to Houston – For Carey Worrell, It’s the Simple Things in Life That Matter
    2025/01/08

Alright, cats and kittens, welcome back to The Shady Lawyer Podcast, where we take a hard look at the law through a lens more cracked than a James Joyce novel. This week, we’ve got Carey Worrell, a Harvard-educated legal eagle who’s managed to accomplish what most lawyers believe to be impossible—she has managed to build a thriving law practice while maintaining her sanity. “Practice law for profit and fun,” they said. Well, Carey has apparently cracked the code.

Carey’s got one of those origin stories that would make a Marvel screenwriter salivate—Harvard Law, where Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan once called on her in class. Spoiler alert: Carey went full deer-in-the-headlights. But there’s no need to worry, Carey’s got a better redemption arc than Robert Downey, Jr.

After stepping away from the law to be a stay-at-home mom, she dove back into the legal world, started her own practice—Simple Law Texas—where she’s been serving up no-nonsense solutions in business law, immigration, probate, and real estate.

Oh, and let’s not forget, she’s a thrill-seeker too. Cliff jumping? Paragliding? Probably gets her adrenaline fix before breakfast. Work-life balance? Nailed it.

  • Episode 1: A Lawyer, a Jew, and a Music Afficionado Walk Into a Bar...Oh Wait, That's Just Robert Epstein.
    2024/12/31

Welcome to The Shady Lawyer Podcast, the world's premier legal podcast for the lawyer, law student, and layperson, alike. It’s our first episode, so if you’re listening, congrats—you’re ahead of the curve. In this episode, I sit down with the incomparable Robert Epstein, a lawyer who’s somehow managed to juggle Judaism, running a law firm, and a love for rock legends with equal aplomb.

    Here’s What You'll Hear:

    Judaism: Religion or race?

Judaism’s Role in Law: We get into how Jewish values and traditions sneak their way into the law.

Jewish Stereotypes: Yep, we went there. Jewish guilt and other clichés. Are stereotypes wrong if they're factually right?

Quitting Booze and Finding Clarity: Robert opens up about his journey to ditch the drinks, how it’s changed his life, and why he doesn’t miss the hangovers one bit.

Running a Law Firm: Robert drops some knowledge about what it’s like to start and run a high-brow firm.

Rock Legends: Dylan, Springsteen, The Stones, The Dead—if you don’t know who these people are, your folks failed you.

    Stuff We Mentioned:

You can learn more about Robert at epsteinpc.com.

You can check out our fine work over at shadylawyer.com and jacksonmediations.com. You can sign up for the Jackson Mediations newsletter, Mediation Monday, at either site. It hasn't been released yet, but it will be coming post-haste.
