  • PARENTS: Are You Doing Gratitude Right?!
    2024/11/26

Hi Parental Units! Welcome to a Turkey Week edition of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast!!

We are THANKFUL to those of you who have been with us since the start of this over a year ago AND to those who have just found us. This podcast is for parents of teen athletes and performers who are engaged in the hardest job on planet earth: parenting!

In EP 72 we explore the concept of gratitude, particularly in the context of parenting and personal relationships with your teens. We hit on the importance of genuine gratitude, by discussing what a developmental psychologist (Dr. Janae Nelson) labels as "shallow gratitude."

What does shallow gratitude mean to you? And, how could it be sending the wrong message to your teens if it is how you are modeling and practicing gratitude (we know you're not!!)?

Some helpful insights from EP 72 to grab onto:

-Gratitude can be practiced at different levels.

-Shallow gratitude lacks a connection to the giver.

-Expressing gratitude to children reinforces positive behavior.

    -Handwritten notes create deeper connections.

    -Gratitude helps combat stress .

-Face-to-face gratitude can lead to stronger relationships.

Moms & Dads: Let's. Get. Grateful. And, let's get grateful at a very high level!!

  • PARENTS: Is THIS Making Your Job Harder?!
    2024/11/19

Oh, moms and dads, you already know how difficult your job is as a parent. We like to say here on The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast that "it is the hardest job and there's not a close second." Yep, it's tough.

So...do we actually make it EVEN harder (why would we ever do that?!!!!!) by using ________? Fill in the blank with the nasty word we wrestled with in Episode 70. Yep, the "S" word. No, not that "S" word but this "S word": sarcasm. Hello, darkness my old friend! If you just discovered us and haven't listened to Episode 70, now would be a good time to do that!

Speed us up to 1.5 or 1.75 and get your fill of The Ten Reasons Why You Should Never Use Sarcasm. We've made this horrific mistake as coaches and parents and we want to to treasure your connections and communication with your teen athlete or performer.

Some gems from EP 71 to consider:

--Sarcasm is a very risky form of communication

--The more important the person, the connection, and the situation, the more it is critical that you do NOT use sarcasm.

--Parents often make their jobs harder through ineffective communication.

--Sarcasm can undermine trust and create confusion in relationships.

--Using sarcasm can damage a your teen's self-esteem.

--Sarcasm can lead to increased stress and anxiety for both parents and children.

--A "negativity culture" can develop from habitual sarcasm.

--Motivation in teens can decrease due to sarcastic remarks.

--Sarcasm can stifle creativity and risk-taking in children.

--Power imbalances in relationships can be reinforced by sarcasm.

--Increasing awareness of sarcasm's impact is crucial for improvement.

  • PARENTS: Are you Ready to Dance with the Stars?
    2024/11/11

Hello Super Moms & Dads! Welcome to a MISSION CRITICAL edition of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast!! And if you're wondering if it has to do with the dynamic and often delicate dance of communication, you are right...AGAIN! (Parents are always right, right?!)

In EP 70 we specifically dive into a crucial communication subject that can get a little blurred, messy, and unfortunately hurtful. We're going to focus on the differences between sarcasm and clever wit. It's a bit tricky! In fact, it's more than that when it comes to sarcasm. We believe it is quite "risky" especially in high-stakes situations. While clever wit can be funny and uplifting, sarcasm is a big, fat, dud. It always fizzles and we want the good kind of fireworks to erupt in your parent/teen convos!

Some helpful insights from EP 70 to grab onto:

-Communication is a dynamic dance involving both speaker and listener.

-Sarcasm can often be misinterpreted and is risky in communication.

-Clever wit is more about uplifting and connecting than mocking.

-Tone and delivery significantly affect how messages are perceived.

-Building strong relationships allows for more playful communication.

-Understanding the mood of the audience is crucial for effective humor.

-Intent behind words is key to positive communication.

-Clever wit can lighten the mood and foster connection.

-Engaging the brain before engaging the mouth can prevent misunderstandings!
