  • How Do We Keep AI Legit? The Intersection of AI and Blockchain
    2024/10/24

What are the most important ways that you see AI impacting crypto/Web3?

Going back to 2017, I have always believed and spoken about the yin and yang of AI and blockchain in potential perfect union to advance both spaces for the good of all industries. How might this work? Fundamentally, we are talking about AI acting as the intelligence agent – new ideas or concepts and blockchain/crypto/Web3 acting as the database. That is, blockchain serving as a verifiable repository for information at rest, referable for AI to both store information and use as an oracle, i.e. a source of truth. This iterative process set in an exponential age is extraordinarily powerful and can rapidly deploy new automated systems. For example, the ability to create a tokenized ticketing system for events, stocks, incentivized games, metaverse properties or any asset. Each can be created in a far more automated process via engineered prompts leveraging multimodal generative AI agents – creating the art, the content, the plan of action to execute each idea, and then the assets (web3) to store that verifiable information on the blockchain, be it a plot of land, token, coin, or identity. There are innumerable examples, and ones that have not even been thought of which will surface soon.

  • Hitting the Trifecta for AGI: When Will We Hit Artificial General Intelligence?
    2024/10/22

AGI is likely around the corner. We need to mentally prepare for it. Here are three avenues as I see this unfold.

Recently at a talk in Boston, I walked through these concepts with the audience.

    Quick Step Back:

The adult brain has approximately 100 billion neurons, it orchestrates over 100 trillion connections—far outstripping the complexity of what we have seen with all connected devices and content on the Internet. That said, our current most powerful transformer model, the T in GPT, only handles 1.2 trillion connections, but seriously, looky at what it can do now with only 1.2% of the connections of our human brain.

This staggering neural network we are seeing unfold continues to confound the best scientists. We still have the most basic questions left to answer, such as, how do we experience intuition? That sudden, seemingly magical understanding of something without conscious reasoning is a puzzle. Some researchers argue that intuition is the brain’s way of drawing on subconscious memories and knowledge, while others suggest it’s simply a cognitive shortcut our minds take to save time. Regardless, it remains a mystery how we process such insights with so little conscious effort.

Then there's memory—how can a melody or scent suddenly transport me back to 2nd grade when on the playground and someone shouts, “rover red rover, send Joe right over,” and I ran full speed into my teacher’s back? She returned later that afternoon to the classroom, thankfully. Now every time I smell Bengay, I think of that moment. Despite extensive research into brain structures involved in memory, we are only just barely sniffing the surface of how memories are truly coded, saved, and recalled.

  • Oh Yes, NFT Paris Recap - It's Here!
    2024/10/04

Paris, France: Glistening, shimmering, and pulsating above the city of love, it’s as if the Eiffel Tower, a beacon of twinkling light at night, beckoned the global audience of over 18,000 people dedicated to art, community, and innovation to NFT.Paris, a conference focused on the emerging technology. Ask most normies, and they will likely still scoff at the viability of NFTs. Not this group. The enthusiasm never waned for the visionaries, during the darkest days of the bear market, they were building. Producing new protocols, testing new blockchains, assembling new businesses, networking across continents, bolstering communities, and ever offering to help those less familiar with the potential of NFTs, these stewards remained beyond the initial hype cycle and use cases of 2021.

    NFTs Clear Winner:

One of the shining examples of this derivative blockchain technology is its community. Whether you’re aware or not, organizations like CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and dozens of others fostered genuine connectiveness for people. Initially virtual, the IRL events manifest love, especially this year in Paris. I had the good fortune to attend the Punks Brunch, a “tokengated” event (e.g. TokenProof), utilizing provable assets in digital wallets, soon to be nearly universal for concerts and sporting venues, to grant access. The technical acumen, depth of passion, openness, creativity, of these pixelated PFP (profile picture) owners and their friends at the event was palpable. The diversity of thoughts, borderless kinship, and drive to create abounded at the CryptoPunk Brunch. It alone is a testament to the first use case of NFTs which remains viable.

  • What is a Photo Anymore, Anyways?
    2024/10/04

In an era where technology advances at breakneck speed, the concept of a "photo" is rapidly evolving. Once, a photograph was a static representation of a moment in time, a slice of reality captured by a lens. Today, however, the boundaries between reality and artificiality are becoming increasingly blurred, especially with the advent of AI-driven features like Google Pixel 9's "add me" function. This new technology allows users to insert themselves into a photo after it has been taken, raising profound questions about the nature of truth, authenticity, and the future of digital imagery.

The Changing Definition of a Photograph

For decades, photographs were synonymous with authenticity. They were trusted to convey truth because they were believed to be unaltered representations of reality. Even as digital photography introduced the possibility of editing and enhancing images, the core belief persisted that a photograph was, at its essence, a real depiction of something that actually existed in front of the camera.

However, with the rise of AI-driven editing tools, this assumption is no longer tenable. The latest example of this is Google Pixel 9's "add me" feature, which allows users to insert a person—often themselves—into a photo after it has been taken. The implications of this are enormous: the photo is no longer a simple snapshot of a moment but a manipulated creation where the line between what was and what could have been is entirely blurred.

  • How Twitter… err, X Will Transform Everything
    2024/10/04

X is clearly official now - moving away from Twitter branding. The little blue birdie has departed. What does this mean for the future of Twitter and all of the various components around the business? There is much in-store for the future of X, but will it flourish or flop? It’s time to untangle X.

Elon Musk has signaled via posts, Spaces, and media outlets that he plans to transform the app in 5 main ways:

    • Payments (Monetization – think taps for views)

    • Tweets or X’s (Written word)

    • Video (Long form video)

    • Native Coins (crypto? banking? commerce?)

    • Audio (Next interactions)

Let us think about the possibilities that he outlined.

    Payments $$$:

Elon has promised X will be the most impactful financial system in the world. As the face of crypto changes, it is certain that cryptocurrency will be core to this. Use your X app to pay for dinner. Have a desire to “tip” someone for their tweet? Send someone some money for services they provided – legitimate services, mind you! You could do this all via a DM. In essence, what you have here is the beginning of use cases at scale for Web3 – though we are still figuring out how centralized this will be verses the strict constructionist view on Web3 being completely decentralized. There are components of both in this model. This is a creator economy.

  • FedNow, The Realtime US Payment System - One Significant Concern
    2024/10/04

"Now people have the ability to transfer money instantly, but FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) – pushed by social media and rapid communication, will, at some point, create runs on banks in a click of a mouse or at the touch of a screen… the Fed needs to force banks to increase reserves, now."

Over the past seven years I have speaking and publishing thoughts on the movement to a more digital form of global payment rails, namely cryptocurrency. During that period, we have seen the blockchain innovation push government and private companies into evolving money. One such outgrowth in the US was the creation of FedNow in 2019, and now released recently. It is a big move for the Fed, and while they dismiss it, it is very likely a movement in the general direction of a CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency). Technology innovation pushed the US Federal Government into greater alignment with the likes of Venmo, CashApp, PayPal, and Zelle. This is step one on a long path toward the true digitization of money.

As background, FedNow is a real-time payments rail that enables instant payments for businesses operating in the United States. It is available to depository institutions in the United States and allows individuals and businesses to send instant payments through their depository institution accounts.

  • What the... Liquid Neural Networks
    2024/10/04

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI), it's easy to be swept up by utopian dreams or dystopian fears. But what does the future of AI really hold? Srinivas Narayanan, Vice President of Applied AI at OpenAI, recently shared his insights at the "From the Labs of OpenAI" session, offering a nuanced perspective on where AI is heading and the challenges we face.

    The Inflection Point of AI

Narayanan kicked off the session by acknowledging the polarized views surrounding AI. On one hand, there are those who believe AI will solve all our problems. On the other, there are concerns about AI exacerbating existing issues. This dichotomy isn't new. Throughout history, technological advancements have often sparked both excitement and fear.

"Large language models and our deeper understanding of scaling laws are driving the current inflection point in AI," Narayanan explained. This newfound capability makes it seem like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) might finally be within reach. However, the journey to this point has been far from linear, and the future remains uncertain.

  • What in the World is Decentralized AI?
    2024/10/04

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, decentralization is emerging as a critical paradigm shift, promising to revolutionize how we handle data, privacy, and AI capabilities. At the "Decentralized AI" session, Ramesh Raskar, Associate Professor at MIT Media Lab, provided an illuminating and thought-provoking perspective on this topic. Here’s an exploration of the concepts discussed and their potential implications for the future of AI.

    A Vision of Decentralized AI

Raskar began with a fascinating anecdote about a "Talk to God" booth at Burning Man, where festival-goers shared their deepest secrets with a voice on the other end of the line. This quirky setup underscored a fundamental human desire for a trusted, all-knowing advisor—something Raskar believes decentralized AI can aspire to become.

In today’s world, we already see glimpses of this in applications like Google Maps, which we trust to guide us through our daily journeys. Imagine extending this trust beyond navigation to other aspects of our lives, such as health, shopping, and personal development. However, to achieve this, AI systems must go beyond the surface-level understanding provided by current models like ChatGPT.
