Keeping that pack light, yet filling it with food that will keep energy up while not taking up space or adding weight can be a tricky feat. BEC dives into simple, basic tips to survive that first trip. The key is to begin planning now, weeks before you head out on that trip. It’s always tempting to head online and purchase pre-packaged meals, and freeze-dried foods that claim to taste great, weigh almost nothing while the ratio of carbs or protein is needed for physical activity. The oversight comes when not having tried them first at home! Happy Stomach, Happy Trip Adding in miles of physical activity first off we know often causes the body not just to burn up calories fast, but also can accelerate the process of digesting food and the need for #2 quickly (yup, we’re talking poop)!! Before being stuck on the trail with food that might be healthy but doesn’t necessarily agree with your stomach right off the bat, you’ll want to start adjusting your diet now and trying these tips BEC offers in this episode! Most Important Tip: Try ALL foods at home well before the Trip, Adventure or Hike! Saving Backpack Weight The pack gets heavy fast, and especially when needing to stay hydrated too. Think of food that can be consumed, the wrapping can be burned or easily packed out and keep your energy intact. Believe BEC, it is not as easy as it sounds yet it can BE EASY to do with a little preparation and DIY R&D (aka research & development). We’re telling you, TRY everything you have before you pack your ride to head out to the backcountry. BEC was raised on a large ranch, has been a certified trail guide, packed in and elk hunted the backcountry. She is seasoned on what to know, but as one “never knows what’s truly around the bend” believes strongly you can never over-prepare. Do not make planning a headache either, have fun and make it a family adventure so that even if loved ones cannot join on this adventure they will still feel as thou they are part of the excitement! Easy Dessert Tip: Oven or Dutch Oven Approved! Fun, Easy Soda Pop Desserts Desserts ANYONE can make… Have you seen Soda Pop desserts on TikTok? Using Soda Pop, and Forget the water. TikTok creators like @jordan_the_stallion8, have been testing out the trend. Instead Mixing a ¼ cup of Dr. Pepper soda pop to a boxed brownie mix and an egg, bake like usual and you’ve got Pop Brownies… Well BEC (Rebecca Wanner) hates to bust the bubble on this so-called “NEW TREND”! Our cabin master of the Dutch Oven, aka Tigger (Jeff Erhardt), has been using soda or pop in his cakes for years when cooking over the fire! Tigger makes amazing desserts by simply melting butter on the bottom of a hot Dutch oven, adding the dry cake mix and pouring over the top a can of soda or pop, covering with the lid, and setting on the hot embers or coals. Don’t forget to add those hot embers/coals on top of the lid too!! Want a cobbler?? Toss in a can of your favorite canned fruit canned pie filling and BOOM – You have a Dutch Oven Cobbler! Tigger isn’t the only one making delicious desserts using a can of soda pop. Head to TheBendShow.com for our good friend, Kent Rollins the Cowboy Chef and another lover of the Dutch Oven to grab his recipe and watch his easy “HOW TO” for an easy Old Fashioned Blackberry Cobbler. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 205 Details Relief Efforts Post-Hurricane Helene: Mountain Mules Deliver Aid & Beware: Customs Tax on Electronics in Mexico Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts: Mountain Mules Bring Hope to Appalachia In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a dedicated team of volunteers, including the Cajun Navy 2016 from Watson, Louisiana, and Mountain Mule Packer Ranch in Mount Ulla, North Carolina, is providing crucial aid to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Challenges in the Aftermath Hurricane Helene left many areas inaccessibly devastated, with washed-out roads and power outages complicating relief efforts. Helicopters and C-17 aircraft from FEMA have helped, but some communities remain unreachable except by mule. The Role of Mountain Mules The mules are invaluable for delivering essential supplies to remote mountain communities. Known for their ability to navigate challenging terrains, these "beasts of burden" mules are not only reliable but also carry a legacy of service. Community Requests for Assistance Despite limited communication, locals have been reaching out for help via social media, sharing their urgent needs. Requests for insulin and other medical supplies highlight the dire situations many families face. As there is no power either in these locations, locals are hiking to higher elevations in order to send assistance request messages. Collaborative Relief Efforts On-site in Montreat, North Carolina, the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch team coordinated with the Cajun Navy 2016, and are working tirelessly to deliver supplies to affected areas like Black Mountain, where flooding caused extensive damage. Heartwarming Stories of Hope These volunteers have made a significant impact, not just by delivering supplies but also by offering emotional support. One heartwarming incident involved helping a family whose home was lost, bringing them food, water, and even stuffed animals for their children. Continuing Support and Updates To facilitate ongoing relief, both the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch and Cajun Navy 2016 Facebook pages provide regular updates and ways to contribute including using the Venmo listed below. Their resilience along with the affected communities shines through as they band together to support one another in these trying times. Travelers with more than one device face a tax of up to 19% of the device's value, capped at $4,000. The rule, which has been in place for years, is now being enforced more strictly. Some speculate this is to prevent resale or increase tax revenue from the influx of visitors. Unlike in the U.S., where no such limit exists, Mexican customs can confiscate extra devices if the tax is not paid. Travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with customs rules, as they also limit items like cameras and tobacco. While making international travel plans, always know and understand the local rules and customs regulations. We explore winter folklore theories, such as the Wooly Bear Caterpillar and Farmers Almanac, plus have gift ideas to order now! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 204 Details Understanding Property Rights: Protect Against Squatter Rights & Gift Ideas To Order Now How to Avoid Squatter Rights on Private Property What Are Squatter Rights? Squatter rights, often referred to as "adverse possession," allow individuals who occupy land without the owner’s permission to potentially gain legal ownership after a certain period. Each state has different laws governing how and when squatter rights apply. States That Recognize Squatter Rights California: Under California law, a squatter can claim adverse possession if they possess the property openly, continuously, and without permission for five years. Texas: In Texas, squatters can gain rights after ten years of continuous, visible, and notorious possession. New York: New York allows squatters to claim adverse possession after ten years of uninterrupted possession. Florida: In Florida, a squatter must occupy the property for seven years and demonstrate "color of title" to claim adverse possession.Illinois: Illinois requires a squatter to possess the property for 20 years without permission. Federal Law Regarding Squatter Rights While squatter rights are primarily governed by state law, certain federal laws can play a role in property ownership disputes, especially concerning eviction procedures. The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed individuals to claim land under specific conditions, although this act is rarely invoked today. Federal law typically supports state regulations, which is why understanding your state’s laws is critical. How to Avoid Squatter Rights on Your Property Here are some practical strategies to help you protect your property from squatters: 1. Regular Property Inspections Conduct regular inspections of your property, especially if it’s vacant. Frequent visits can deter squatters and help you spot any unauthorized occupancy early. 2. Secure Your Property Invest in strong locks, security systems, and fencing. Make your property less accessible to prevent potential squatters from taking residence. 3. Maintain Your Property Keep your property well-maintained and visibly occupied. Overgrown lawns or dilapidated buildings can attract squatters. Regular maintenance can convey that the property is cared for and monitored. 4. Post No Trespassing Signs Clearly mark your property with "No Trespassing" signs. While this won't guarantee protection, it can serve as a legal deterrent and demonstrate that you do not consent to unauthorized entry. 5. Utilize Surveillance Cameras Installing surveillance cameras can deter squatters and provide evidence if you need to take legal action. Make sure the cameras are visible to enhance their deterrent effect. 6. Engage Neighbors Communicate with your neighbors about your property. They can help monitor it and notify you of any suspicious activity. 7. Quick Legal Action If you discover someone squatting on your property, take immediate legal action. Consult an attorney specializing in property law to understand your rights and options for eviction. Remember When: Mississippi Hunters Land HUGE Gator in Storm Looking back on adventurous hunts, do you remember this one? Reported about back in 2023 by Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: A Mississippi alligator hunter, Kyle Mallett of St. Martin, recently captured a 13-foot, 650-pound alligator amid a stormy night on his last hunt of the season. After a frustrating evening with no big catches and a thunderstorm forcing him off the water, Mallett returned to the Pascagoula River marsh with his hunting partner, Matthew Brooks of Biloxi. While clearing grass tangled in the boat’s propeller, Mallett was startled when the massive alligator surfaced just three feet from his boat. The water was shallow and clear, allowing him to hook the alligator with a fishing rod. Despite the gator taking off and the challenge of heavy rain, Mallett, with help from his cousin Jarrod Davis and his team, eventually managed to secure and reel in the gator. After a 30-minute struggle to get the giant into the boat, they finally succeeded. The alligator weighed 650 pounds and measured 13 feet, 3 inches, making it one of the largest caught this year. • Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Tax Hikes: Key Updates
    2024/09/07
Episode 201 Details Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Fee Hikes: Key Updates Latest News: Hunting, Outdoors, Travel & Western Living ALASKA: HUNTER SURVIVES BEAR ATTACK & GUNSHOT WOUND Tyler Johnson, a 32-year-old hunter from Sterling, Alaska, survived a brutal brown bear attack and a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting on the Kenai Peninsula. Johnson was hunting black bears with his father, Chris, a former US Federal Wildlife Service officer, when they accidentally startled a sleeping brown bear in the dense grass. The bear charged Tyler, who struggled to draw his sidearm before being knocked down. Despite sustaining severe injuries from the bear's claws and a gunshot wound to his leg, Tyler managed to fire seven rounds into the brown bear, eventually incapacitating the animal. His father, Chris, helped finish off the bear and immediately began treating Tyler's injuries which included an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to Tyler’s leg. Tyler Johnson always carries a trauma kit hunting that has QuikClot and a slingshot band which the men used on the gunshot wound. The two men worked quickly, applying a tourniquet and calling for help using a Garmin InReach. It took search and rescue over an hour to get to the hunters, Chris made his son tell him hunting stories in order to help keep him awake and mind off the pain. Tyler was airlifted to Alaska Medical Center, treated, and released the same evening. This incident marks the third bear attack in the U.S. this year. Essentials: Hunting & Hiking Trauma Kit Before hitting the trails during hunting season or out for a fall hike; carrying a trauma kit is absolutely necessary. The backcountry is treacherous, and must be taken seriously. First rule - Always notify someone of your hunting, hiking or camping plans, destination, and time expected to be gone. Second rule - Always fully understand how to use any of the items in your trauma kit. The field is for reaction, home is for learning, understanding and practice. Trauma Kit Must Haves Tourniquet, Elastic Bandage, Gauze, Trauma Dressing & Trauma Sheers. QuikClot / Blood Stopper Emergency Heat Blanket, Headlamp, Fire Starter, Battery Pack. GPS Satellite Communicator: Garmin InReach or AtlasTrax for example. Duct Tape, Paracord, Moleskin, Tweezers. Benadryl (antihistamine), Tylenol, Ibuprofen. The pack, introduced from Oregon, has been linked to the deaths of cattle and sheep in Grand County, Colorado. Despite repeated requests from ranchers for lethal removal, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) opted for relocation, stating that this decision does not set a precedent for future wolf-livestock conflicts. The relocation decision aims to balance the state’s wolf restoration goals with the needs of affected ranchers. This action follows the denial of permits for lethal control, despite rising livestock losses. The Cattlemen’s Association criticized CPW for prioritizing wolves over ranchers' rights, highlighting the significant impact of the wolves on local livestock. The agency's strategy faces scrutiny as it walks a fine line between wolf conservation and livestock protection, with the future location of the relocated wolves still uncertain. This fee, originally introduced in 2019, helps cover the environmental and infrastructure costs associated with international tourism, which brought in over $11 billion from March 2023 to March 2024. However, the Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) criticizes the hike, warning it could hurt New Zealand's global competitiveness as tourists may choose more affordable destinations like Canada or the UK. In addition to the IVL, tourist visa fees will also rise on October 1, from $131USD to $211USD, potentially leading to longer processing times. Despite concerns, similar "tourist taxes" are ...

SPORTS: RISE OF COLLEGE BASS FISHING College bass fishing has emerged as a significant pathway to professional angling, with top university programs like Bethel University in Tennessee setting the standard. The 2024 Bassmaster College Series, a key event in college fishing, has seen a surge in participation, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport. As college fishing remains a club sport, meaning it is not NCAA-recognized, it opens the doors for students to earn sponsorships and win prize money, making it an attractive option for aspiring professional anglers. Universities like Bethel have pioneered the sport, offering scholarships, full-time coaches, and extensive financial support, which have helped them dominate national rankings. As more schools follow suit, college bass fishing is becoming a significant recruiting tool, drawing in both male and female students from across the U.S. and even internationally. This rise in interest and investment is cementing college bass fishing's place as a key feeder system for professional bass fishing, shaping the future of the sport. The sport's expansion beyond the Southeastern U.S. and into new regions is further fueled by the involvement of Major League Fishing, broadening opportunities for students nationwide. TEENS INVENT THERMAL AI DASHCAM A group of all female high school students from STEM School Highlands Ranch in Denver has developed a groundbreaking AI-powered dashcam designed to prevent wildlife collisions on roads. Using a Flir thermal imager and an AI model, the device detects animals, particularly deer, on roadways before they are visible to drivers, providing crucial warnings that can prevent accidents. The project began as part of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, driven by the students’ desire to address the frequent and costly wildlife-vehicle collisions in Colorado. After exploring various solutions, young women chose thermal imaging for its effectiveness in low-light conditions, when most accidents occur. Their invention, currently in the final prototype phase, aims to alert drivers of potential collisions up to 500 feet ahead, significantly improving reaction times compared to traditional headlights. Despite not winning the national competition, the students remain committed to refining and testing their device. Their innovative approach has the potential to save lives and reduce the financial impact of wildlife collisions across the country. The six New England states—Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island—are top destinations for leaf-peeping enthusiasts. In 2023, New Hampshire alone saw 3.6 million visitors during the fall season. This year, the foliage season is expected to start later due to warm temperatures, but vibrant colors are anticipated thanks to abundant rainfall. Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are particularly popular for their fall landscapes, with peak viewing expected around Halloween in the northern and western areas, and shortly after in the southern regions. Popular scenic routes for fall colors include Vermont’s Route 7, the Upper Connecticut River Valley Loop, and Maine’s Castine and Penobscot Bay Loop.
