    2024/09/15

Believers are called to “grow through”, not “get through” trials.

    James 1:2-4, Romans 5:3

To grow through trials, we must confidently seek the wisdom of God through His Word and prayer.

    James 1:5-8, Romans 8:32, Psalm 19:7, Colossians 3:16

The pain of trials is temporary, the joy of heaven is eternal.

    James 1:12,17-18, 1 Corinthians 15:20-22, Romans 10:17

Lessons from the Life of James

Living in close proximity to Jesus does not guarantee you’re actually a follower of Jesus.

    Matthew 13:55, Mark 3:20-21, John 7:5

When someone experiences and trusts in the resurrected Jesus Christ, they are eternally transformed.

    1 Corinthians 15:3-8, Acts 1:14, Galatians 2:9

There’s no greater title/role to be known for than “servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ”.

    James 1:1

Opportunity: Discover and define the opportunity.

Alignment: Does this new opportunity align with what you are called to do?

Process (Systems): How will we engage in the opportunity?

    Execute: Engage in the opportunity.

Evaluate: Assess progress or lack thereof.

    Review: Make needed adjustments

Submitting to God and to each other is hard. By nature, we want to have our way. And, too often, we are willing to submit to God and others if there is not too much humility and sacrifice involved.

    Ephesians 5:7-8a

Every person used to live in darkness. This is the doctrine called Original Sin. We don’t become alienated from God because of our sins. We are born as sinners in need of a Savior (Eph. 2:1-3). Paul refers to our state before Jesus as a state of darkness. In our darkness, we are confused (Job 5:14), live in spiritual ignorance (John 1:5) and spiritual blindness (2 Cor. 4:4). Left to ourselves, we are satisfied to stay in darkness (John 3:19).

At some point in the believer’s life, Jesus came. He met us where we were and shone his light on our sinful hearts allowing us to understand our need of him (2 Cor. 4:6). He “delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Col. 1:13-14).

    Ephesians 5:8b-10

When believers are transferred into Christ’s kingdom, we are to “walk as children of light.” Since Jesus is the light of the world, whoever follows him walks in light (John 8:12). The believer strives to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord doing what is good, right, and true.

    Ephesians 5:11-14

Part of living a life pleasing to God involved refraining from parting in the “unfruitful works of darkness.” Paul has already described six works of darkness in 5:3-4 and these works are seen throughout Scripture.

    Read God’s Word Every Day

You cannot imitate someone you don’t know. You must read God’s Word and learn who He is, who you are, and why he put you on this earth. God’s Word addresses the areas we are following short and shows us how to get back on track. You have to read God’s Word every day if you are going to grow in your relationship with God.

    Attend Church Regularly

Coming to church does not make you a Christian, but when you are a believer, you will want to worship, learn, and fellowship with other believers. Throughout history, a distinctive discipline of a growing believer has been involvement in a worshipping, bible believing fellowship.

    Use your spiritual gifts.

    1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace….

Dave hit this hard last week. If you missed it, go back and watch his sermon (August 10/11, 2024).
