  • The Best Of The Xennial Dome (Part I)
    2024/09/09

A Xennial is someone born between 1977 and 1985 - the tail end of Gen X and the older (or "geriatric", ugh) millennials.

The Xennial Dome is/was the podcast which looked back at the Xennial era - Presented by comedy writer Gareth Gwynn and stand-up Esyllt Sears, the show studied the month in xennial history, as well as interviewing notable xennials about their experiences growing up alongside the internet and leaving home just in time for a global financial crisis. Other history podcasts tackle battles and empires, legendary figures and tragic antiheroes and ours does too - but in the form of Northern Rock, 20th Century Fox and Pete Waterman.

This is the first of two Best Of episodes which draw a line under the podcast’s "Xennial Dome" era. We'll be back in October with a new name... But you'll be fine. If you coped with the Marathon, Jif and Opal Fruits rebrands, we’re more than confident you can navigate this.

  • Little Dome: August 2004 (Olympic Marathon, EastEnders thefts and Bernard Levin)
    2024/08/26

Comedy writer Gareth Gwynn spent August 2004 mopping up melted ice cream, Esyllt Sears spent it travelling between London and Cardiff and a group of Olympic marathon runnners spent it navigating the route of the 1896 marathon - although a (since defrocked) Irish priest had other plans. The interrupted marathon is one of the topics covered in this look back at the news 20 years ago this month - and there's a brief visit to 1963 as we remember the journalist Bernard Levin and a moment he'd probably rather forget.

Video of the olympic marathon incident is here and the video of Bernard Levin being punched is here.

  • Little Dome: August 2010 (Free Milk, Summer Wine and The Bill)
    2024/08/20

The temptation to call this episode "Last Of The Summer Milk", or similar, was enormous - but for some reason that sounds absolutely revolting. Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears look back at August 2010 when The Bill and Last Of The Summer Wine stopped and free school milk continued - but only after careful consideration. In this show we consider the full milk curriculum and play a game about episode titles which is slightly harder than you'd think.

  • Little Dome: August 1997 (Be Here Now and Picture Of You)
    2024/08/12

After a brief diversion back to 1981 (or particular interest to tennis fans or those who had dental problems in the Llanelli area) Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears turn their attention to August 1997. It's probably the month we've mentioned the most on this podcast, given its rather grim association with Diana, Princess of Wales - but what else happened that summer? It turns out Britpop was rapidly running out of steam with the release of the long-awaited but much charity-shopped Be Here Now. And, talking of disasters, Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie was released, with one of the all-time great tie-in singles, courtesy of Boyzone - Video Here.

  • Little Dome: August 1985 (Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and ATV Music)
    2024/08/06

Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears return after the Baywatch Break to covering August 1985. It's a bad month to be a Beatle, it turns out, as Michael Jackson buys ATV music and The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is launched, both of which seem designed to put a Beatle's back up.

  • The Battle For Baywatch: With SIKISA (Part 2)
    2024/07/30

This is Part 2 of Esyllt and Stuart's Baywatch Nights themed chat with the brilliant SIKISA so if you haven't heard it yet, make sure you listen to Part 1 or you'll be confused (although, it's about Baywatch Nights so just like when Ken Cheng tackled it, you'll probably be confused, whatever).

In 2021, comedians Esyllt Sears and Stuart Laws bonded over their love of Baywatch - the 1990s action-drama series following a team of lifeguards in slow motion.

But trouble was brewing. Which version of the show was superior? Esyllt maintained it was the original Baywatch. Stu insisted it was Baywatch Nights - the Hasselhoff-led detective/sci-fi spin-off series.

The Battle Of Baywatch had begun - and was subsequently fought across two, unbroadcast, pilot podcast episodes. In each edition, a guest was to be presented with two episodes of the show - Esyllt would select an edition of the original Baywatch while Stuart would source a top-notch edition of Baywatch Nights. Having discussed the themes and montages, the comedian would then be encouraged to pick a side and announce which series they thought was superior.

Despite repeated texts and Whatsapps asking questions like "what, you still have these?", "sorry, what did I say?" and "are you really sure I won't be cancelled?", The Xennial Dome is proud to present these long-lost tapes. This is the second part of the final episode with the fantastic stand-up comedian, Sikisa - concentrating on Stuart's Baywatch Nights pick - Space Spore.

    Links:

Baywatch - Island Of Romance (Seres 3, Episode 13) is available on ITVX and sometimes Amazon (although not right now).

Baywatch Nights - Space Spore (Series 2, Episode 10) is available on YouTube.
