Before his parliamentary career, he was an officer in the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS) and opted for voluntary retirement to join the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in 2018. Dr. Patnaik is also an academic and author, with a PhD in Institutional Economics. He has written extensively on issues related to economics, finance, technology, and the environment. He is a regular columnist in several leading newspapers and digital platforms. In addition to his legislative duties, Dr. Patnaik practices law and advises clients on privacy, data protection, technology, and corporate and government affairs.
