Words matter. This is particularly evident when we go to the grocery store and see words like, “natural,” “organic,” and more. These words mean something, and they don’t mean other things. It is important for us to be aware of these words, especially when it comes to talking about things that we take into our body.In this episode, Dr. Michael Smith interviews Dr. Kayla Preece, a naturopathic doctor with a background in regulatory affairs and toxicology. They discuss the role of naturopathic medicine in the regulatory landscape, specifically in the assessment of the safety of food ingredients and dietary supplements. Dr. Preece explains the concept of Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and how it is applied in the United States. She also sheds light on the challenges and complexities of regulatory compliance and the importance of understanding the science behind ingredient safety. The conversation highlights the need for clear definitions of terms like "healthy" and "natural" in food labeling and the impact of regulatory decisions on public health.Key Takeaways:* The regulatory landscape for food ingredients and dietary supplements is complex and constantly evolving. Understanding the science behind ingredient safety is crucial for regulatory compliance.* Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) is a designation for food ingredients that have been deemed safe based on scientific evidence and expert consensus. The GRAS process involves assessing the composition, manufacturing, and intended use of an ingredient.* The definition of terms like "healthy" and "natural" in food labeling is not well-defined, leading to confusion and potential deception. Clear regulations and standards are needed to protect consumers.* Frozen fruits and vegetables can be a convenient and nutritious option, as freezing helps preserve their nutrients. It is important to focus on simple, whole foods and not be overly fearful of food choices.* The regulatory landscape differs between countries, with varying requirements and standards for ingredient safety. Harmonization of regulations and international collaboration are important for global food safety.-------A naturopathic doctor and toxicologist, Kayla Preece, ND, DABT weaves both disciplines in helping companies (and, indirectly, consumers) bring food and supplement products to the market that are safe and not going to cause any major problems.
