Las fronteras exactas de este modo arquitectónico no pueden determinarse, pues, aunque tradicionalmente venía concediéndose a Lorenzo Bernini la paternidad simbólica del estilo, la historiografía actual descubre antecedentes barrocos en hombres de tanta importancia como Miguel Ángel.

Nos encontramos ante un producto artístico plena­mente oriental. El problema de que los árabes no fueran creadores de formas artísticas propias no resta mérito alguno a su labor. Las soluciones arquitectónicas por ellos adoptadas habían sido empleadas por persas y bizantinos desde muchos siglos atrás, pero lo cierto es que sólo los árabes lograron hacer de este arte un arte universal.
