Side Notes from the Archivist is a preservation of Black culture viewed through a feminist lens. The Archivist leads listeners through poems that epitomize youthful renditions of a Black girl coming of age in Philadelphia’s pre-funk ’80s; episodic adventures of “the Black Girl” whose life is depicted through the white gaze; and selections of verse evincing affection for self and testimony to the magnificence within Black femme culture at-large.

This book will be different, but unique. For my poetry is real and somewhat sheik. They’re all short stories about my past. Family, loved ones, and dreams that couldn’t last. Freedom of speech {so called} I am blunt. I can write about anything and everything I want. Fighting for life, children, and my rights has been a hassle.

mother is a work rooted in an intimate fracture: an Indigenous child is adopted out of her tribe and raised by a non-Indian family. As an adult finding her way back to her origins, our unnamed narrator begins to put the pieces of her birth family's history together through the stories told to her by her mother, father, sister, and brother, all of whom remained on the reservation where she was born.
