Il grande poema epico pubblicato nel 1581, fu in realtà iniziato a comporre quando il Tasso aveva 15 anni, nel 1559. Rivide poi il poema in seguito, dando luogo ad un altro poema: la "Gerusalemme conquistata". Questo tema lo accompagnò dunque per tutta la sua vita.

Le Metamorfosi descrivono molte trasformazioni di persone in alberi, bestie, pietre o stelle (o viceversa), ma operano loro stesse una metamorfosi più attraente: quella dei miti greci in piccole novelle fantastiche, con personaggi vivi e svariati per temperamento, raziocinio ed emotività. Nemmeno il successivo appannarsi del prestigio di Ovidio ha mai esaurito la lista dei riverberi letterari delle Metamorfosi, fino a ieri – probabilmente fino a domani.

L’Eneide non è un semplice poema epico ma il quadro di un passaggio fra il vecchio mondo pagano e il nuovo mondo cristiano (nondimentichiamoci infatti che Virgilio è stato la guida di Dante nella Commedia). Its story is well-known: New Year celebrations at Camelot are disrupted by the fearsome and strange appearance of the Green Knight who challenges Arthur's court to a game consisting of an exchange of blows; the Green Knight's survival of the beheading that ensues locks Sir Gawain into a commitment to receive a return blow a year later, bound by his honor to fulfill the terms of the game.

The magisterial poetry of Milton enriches the encounter and, while not matching the greatness achieved in Paradise Lost, provides drama and depth.

The Song of Roland is acknowledged today as the first masterpiece of French vernacular literature and one of the world’s greatest epic poems. Written down around the year 1090, The Song of Roland finely crafted verses tell of the betrayal and defeat of Charlemagne’s beloved nephew at the Pass of Roncevaux in the Pyrenees and of the revenge subsequently sought on his behalf.
