Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

Sheridan & Moore even say they never saw him in Montreal. Many years pass, and it seems that he has died somewhere or started a new life.

The Gospel of John is the fourth of the four canonical gospels. It contains a highly schematic account of the ministry of Jesus, with seven "signs" culminating in the raising of Lazarus (foreshadowing the resurrection of Jesus) and seven "I am" discourses (concerned with issues of the church-synagogue debate at the time of composition) culminating in Thomas' proclamation of the risen Jesus as "my Lord and my God". The gospel's concluding verses set out its purpose, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

The Captain of the Polestar (and Other Tales) is a collection of short stories by Scottish writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first published in 1883. ' The Captain of the Pole-Star ' is one of the best examples of Conan Doyle's weird fiction. This is a superb collection of strange mystery tales that are all independent, sometimes involving ship voyages, shipwrecks, amnesia, lost love, grand thefts, comedy, and fairy tales. "The Book" is an unfinished short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft, believed to have been written in late 1933. It was first published in the journal Leaves in 1938, after Lovecraft's death. In the story fragment, the narrator is given an ancient book by a strange bookseller, and when he takes it home and examines it, weird and sinister events ensue. In October 1933, Lovecraft wrote in a letter: I am at a sort of standstill in writing disgusted at much of my older work, and uncertain as to avenues of improvement.

"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is an analysis of a beleaguered, multilayered, and conflicted suitor, trying to reconcile his dichotomy of having a foray of overwhelming ideas juxtaposed with underwhelming execution, in the arena of life and love. It was the poetic debut of the American-born British poet T.S Eliot. The poem was originally published in 1915.

The Cabman's Story (sub-titled The Mysteries of a London "Growler") is a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published anonymously in the Cassell's Saturday Journal on 17 May 1884. A cabman tells one of his clients three stories he experienced. The first one is about a dead passenger, the second about a passenger with a mysterious box, and the last one tells the story of a passenger who is a terrorist.
