Die Mitglieder des "Kanonenclubs" in Baltimore sitzen nach dem Ende des amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges gelangweilt herum. Da schlägt der Präsident vor, eine Kanone zu bauen, die so groß ist, dass sie ein Geschoss auf den Mond befördern kann. Alle gehen das Projekt voller Euphorie an. Bis ein geheimnisvoller Besucher aus Europa auf eine noch kühnere Idee kommt: auch Menschen mit dieser Kanone zum Mond zu befördern.

Abenteuerliche Reise durch die Lüfte! Was für ein Auftritt! Bei der Sitzung des US-Luftschiffer-Clubs im Weldon-Institut in Philadelphia behauptet Erfinder Robur, dass die Ballone langsam und unlenkbar seien und die Zukunft allein Fluggeräten aus Metall gehöre. Wütend gehen die Ballonfahrer auf ihn los. Robur flieht, entführt den Präsidenten des Clubs samt Sekretär und Diener in seine Flugmaschine, genannt "Albatros". Eine abenteuerliche Luftreise beginnt.

Der seltsame Graf d'Artigas besichtigt ein Nervensanatorium in Nordkarolina. Dort wird der geistig verwirrte Erfinder Thomas Roch behandelt. Am Tag nach dem Besuch ist der Erfinder samt seinem Wärter spurlos verschwunden. Roch ist Erfinder eines Sprengstoffes von enormer Zerstörungskraft. Es liegt der Verdacht nahe, dass Roch entführt und so diese Waffe in falsche Hände geraten sein könnte.
