I primi capelli grigi e un maldestro tentativo di tingerseli in casa costringono Agatha a rivolgersi a Mr John, un parrucchiere così bravo da essere soprannominato “il mago”. E ne diventa ben presto cliente fissa, anche perché l’abilità con le forbici non è l’unica qualità di quell’uomo così affascinante... Eppure le pettegole del villaggio sostengono che Mr John nasconda più di un segreto e, in effetti, alcune sue ex clienti sembrano aver paura di lui.

Dopo il fallito matrimonio con James, Agatha non sa più che fare. E, come spesso accade, sceglie di fare la cosa più sbagliata in assoluto. Segue James a Cipro, dove lui è andato per cercare di riprendersi dallo smacco, e conosce un piccolo gruppo di turisti inglesi, del genere che ha “adottato tutti i modi peggiori dell’aristocrazia, e nessuno di quelli migliori” e che tuttavia pare aver stretto amicizia con altri tre turisti, che sono il loro esatto opposto.

Al ritorno dalle vacanze Agatha rimane sconvolta nello scoprire che una nuova donna si è intrufolata nelle simpatie di James, il suo attraente vicino. La bellissima Mary Fortune le è superiore in ogni cosa, soprattutto nel giardinaggio e, con l’imminente Giornata dei Giardini Aperti di Carsely, Agatha si sente profondamente inadeguata. Nel frattempo cominciano a succedere cose strane: alcuni giardini vengono devastati, i pesciolini rossi del vecchio Bernard Spott vengono uccisi, e la nuova arrivata si comporta davvero in modo bizzarro, quasi crudele...

Questa è la storia di come Agatha Raisin, figlia dei bassifondi di Birmingham, sia arrivata a dirigere una prestigiosa agenzia londinese di pubbliche relazioni. Non aspettatevi una favola, però, dato che in questa storia c’è tutta la determinazione e la rabbia di una giovane donna in fuga da una complicata situazione familiare, sposatasi solo per scoprire che il marito era un ubriacone, e che ha dovuto lavorare sodo per sbarcare il lunario.

La mattina del matrimonio di Agatha Raisin con il suo affascinante vicino di casa, James Lacey, non potrebbe essere più limpida e splendente. Ma le nuvole si stanno ammassando e le prime gocce di pioggia – un imbarazzante sfogo provocato da una crema antirughe – si trasformano ben presto in un uragano: Jimmy Raisin, il primo marito di Agatha, le si para davanti poco prima della cerimonia e lei, che lo credeva morto da tempo, quasi lo strangola per l’ira e lo shock.

La vita nei pittoreschi Cotswolds è noiosa e i tentativi di Agatha Raisin di ammaliare James Lacey, il suo affascinante vicino, falliscono uno dopo l’altro. Ma adesso in paese è arrivato un nuovo veterinario, nella cui sala d’aspetto c’è sempre una lunga fila di donne... Un po’ per competizione, un po’ per far ingelosire James, Agatha porta il suo sanissimo gatto a fare una visita e ne esce con un invito a cena. Very soon she's up to her usual tricks, involving the villagers, local police, and, of course, her handsome new neighbour . . .

Intrigue and a string of murders surround the unlikely couple, in a plot as scorching as the Cypriot sun!

Retired PR boss Agatha Raisin is enjoying life in her pretty Cotswold village of Carsely. It even seems likely that the attractive new vet, Paul Bladen, has taken a shine to her. With hair tonic supplied by a local witch, Agatha's tresses begin to flow - but the witch is found bludgeoned to death. The odd elderly residents of Agatha's elegantly faded hotel seem innocuous, but as she delves deeper she discovers secrets best left and powerful motives for revenge.

Agatha Raisin thinks she's in for a treat when her ex-husband James Lacey invites her on holiday but - horrors! - his idea of an idyllic break is the small, run-down resort of Burryhill-on-Sea. And from there on things go from bad to worse, so when a fellow guest in their hotel is found murdered, Agatha herself is chief suspect - and has to solve this case from a locked police cell!
