Nils Holgersson, ein groß gewachsener Junge mit flachsblondem Haar, lebte mit seinen Eltern auf einem Bauernhof. Er war ein richtiger Lausbub. Am liebsten schlief oder aß er und sein größtes Vergnügen war es, irgendetwas anzustellen und vor allem die Tiere am Hof zu quälen. Eines Sonntag morgens musste Nils versprechen in der Bibel zu lesen, da er nicht mit den Eltern in die Kirche gehen wollte. Er aber schlief ein und als er von einem Geräusch erwachte, sah er auf Mutters Truhe ein Wichtelmännchen. Leise stand Nils auf und griff sich ein Fliegennetz.

Und Robin Hood, der mit seiner grünen Schar im Sherwood Wald für den geliebten König gekämpft hatte, schlägt er zum Ritter.
