Bumper is a young white rabbit who lives in the city, in a crowded pen with lots of other rabbits. The old woman who raises bunnies takes a few downtown every day to try to sell them. Bumper is sold to Aunt Helen who gives him to Toby, a spoiled nephew. Toby mistreats Bumper, and a little red-headed girl named Edith takes Bumper from Toby to rescue him. After being put outside in a pen, Bumper manages to escape the pen and his adventures, some not so nice, begin. Eventually, Bumper manages to meet some of his forest cousins, not to return again to the little red-headed girl.

Old Granny Fox was a wise old fox who lived with her grandson Reddy. Reddy is young and impulsive and gets into a great deal of trouble because of this. So Granny must teach him the lessons of nature if he is to survive. The practical lessons about theft, gratitude and kindness that Granny teaches Reddy, as in all Thornton Burgess books, promote these virtues to young children listening to this book.

Sammy Jay is a blue jay who, like most blue jays, is mischievous. He delights in making trouble for other creatures of the Green Meadows and the Green Forest. Sammy really doesn't want to see them hurt, he just wants to make torment them. Enter Chatterer the Red Squirrel, who also lives in the Green Forest and can be as troublesome as Sammy Jay. In The Adventures of Sammy Jay, Chatterer and Sammy Jay match wits and show off their bad attitudes toward one another.

The Adventures of Bobby Coon follows a raccoon whose dead hollow tree is cut down by Farmer Brown and his son. Both are unaware that Bobby is sleeping in it. When Bobby Coon is injured, Farmer Brown’s boy nurses him back to health. Once healthy, he is released back into nature and goes in search of a new home, which is not as easy as he thought it would be.

Peter Rabbit discovers a surprise visitor to the Smiling Pool. It's Mrs. Quack the Duck. She and Mr. Quack have been hunted as they attempt to migrate. Mr. Quack is missing and Mrs. Quack does not know his fate. Peter Rabbit, Jerry Muskrat, Sammy Jay and Blacky the Crow decide to help Mrs. Quack by searching for Mr. Quack.

London takes us back to the Pleistocene when we still lived in the trees. Written in the first-person, the story revolves around the vivid, interlocking dreams from childhood that involve racial memories and the knowledge of his prior existence as a man-like creature named Big Tooth.

Reddy and Granny Fox must outsmart Farmer Brown's Boy who is out to get Reddy for stealing his pet chicken. Along the way, Reddy encounters many of the citizens of the Green Meadows and the Green Forest and with him we learn little lessons about life such as: the perils of being a show off; the importance of using all of one's senses; that it is a fine thing to show sympathy and kindness to others - even our enemies; and that the value of a grandmother's wisdom is inestimable.

Minos is such a lovely planet, as the crew of the space cruiser Explorer discover. Not a thing seems wrong with it. Excepting the food perhaps. And a disease that really isn't. They are surprised to learn they are not the first humans to arrive on Minos. In fact, there is a small colony on Minos whose inhabitants have one odd detail in common, as the Explorer's crew is soon to discover.

In this collection of 16 short stories, Peter often visits Grandfather Frog to learn more about his neighbors. For instance, Peter wants to know why Striped Chipmunk has such beautiful stripes. Peter would like to know if Buster Bear has a tail. Since Grandfather Frog has lived a long time, he is willing to tell stories to Peter and his friends about how some of these things happened (according to Grandfather Frog).
