The Cat- A loner cat surviving by himself one winter in a mountain cabin, his mastrer having left for the winter, receives a visitor to the cabin in the form of an old man seeking shelter. The man is too weak to provide food, the cat appreciates the companionship, and a strong bond is formed. An excellent story about humans and animals and their need for companionship- lots of highly descrptive phrases here that illustrate a short story writer at the top of her game.

In part two our narrator, Joe, now older, heads out to the outback to raise sheep with his best friend who has just married a girl they had grown up with. Upon leaving she asks Joe not to let her new husband go near a drink- because he can't stop it once he gets starrted. Joe promises he won't. The reverend McLaghlin appears large in this story as well- bringing in the sheep.

Henry Lawson was one of Australia's greatest short story writers (I think the best) and poets, and hisn stories tell much about the people who settle Australia and fought the tough climate and barren landscape to farm and raise livestock. This story and the one that follows (Pt. 2) provied accurate histrorical depictions of the men, women, and families that settled that land, and the strength of good preachers who gave the people hope and strength.

The father goes away on a business trip and a strange chain of events takes place when the father's ghost shows up complaining that he was given the ghostship mistakenly while the old man was still alive and needs help getting out of his predicament. nA funny story from Frank Stockton that English teachers have tried to spin as an allegory to the rise in capitalism- but that's pure you-know-what. Stockton just wrote it as a funny short story with a great twist.
