    Join us for another installment of Community Connections presented by the United Way on WTIC 1080AM. Maura Cook, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development, and Patrick McGloin, President, Westland Public Relations and Chair, Advocacy Committee at United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, talk to Steve about how they are working to end poverty. Cook mentioned the strategic planning process, which includes 40 interviews with community members over the last two years. This past summer, community partners from all sectors co-created bold ideas to close gaps and create opportunities in child literacy, wages, housing and life expectancy. These conversations have solidified the United Way's position to promote change and adovcate for their community members. McGloin continued the conversation with the upcoming developments the United Way is planning for the youth in these communities. In 2025, the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut has these priorities for 2025: Young adult employment Early childhood literacy (ages birth to five) They are advocating for more investments in education and training services for opportunity youth, are also advocating for $500,000 per year from the state’s budget to support early childhood literacy. Maura Cook, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Development, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut joins us to remind everyone tax season is fast-approaching and VITA is a crucial resource for individuals needing help in these econonomic times. María Nuñez, an incoming United Way board of directors member and a previous VITA filer and volunteer shares her experience with this service from both sides of the table. Danira Martel, Coordinator and Financial Opportunity Center from The Village for Families & Children shared that 13,000 households were able to be helped by VITA last year.     Join us for Community Connections presented by the United Way on WTIC 1080 AM!

    Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development, Maura Cook joins the program to remind us about the 2nd annual ImpaCT Awards.

    On October 25 along with Fox 61, the United Way will be recognizing and honoring individuals, groups and organizations who make a significant contribution to health care, housing, financial empowerment and/or education in Connecticut.

    Liz Salvatore from Fox 61 joins Cook to elaborate on all the work that has gone into this event.

    Cook and Salvatore have one more surprise up their sleeve...

    The recipient of the George Bahamonde Lifetime Achievement Award, Arnold Chase joins them in the studio. Chase is the founder of the Sandra and Arnold Chase Family Foundation.

    The award is given to those who have kept the future generations in mind, and making sure that the future is bright for them.

    Chase credits his father for his outlook on life and overall philanthropic connections and interests.

    Join us for the July edition of Community Connections presented by the United Way on WTIC 1080AM!

    Maura Cook, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development, joins the program to get listeners to think about the summer slide.

    The summer slide is when students suffer learning loss while they are out of school on summer break. The United Way is committed to help students keep reading while school is out.

    Cook also wants to remind those in New Britain and Hartford that the Dolly Parton Imagination library allows children to receive one age-appropriate book a month from birth-age five at no cost!

    More reading initiatives will be happening this year including, Read Across America Day (Oct. 24, 2024), Read for the Record, United Way Readers, and the United Way will be putting together literacy kits together.

    John Prescod, Director, Education Initiatives at the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut joins Cook today to talk about his work with the organization.

    Prescod and Cook are happy to announce that the United Way and Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford (JFGH) have merged JFGH’s Children’s Reading Partners program with the existing United Way Readers program!

    The United Way turned 100 years old on June 14, and they are continuing the celebration the rest of the year! The Impact awards will be held on October 25. They will also be hosting a centennial gala in December. Tickets are available now
