  • Ep 58 | Mastering Insurance & Superbills with Dr. Jaclyn Fleck
    2025/02/14

In this week's episode of Empower LEP, I had such a fantastic conversation with Dr. Jaclyn Fleck, and let me tell you—if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by insurance billing, superbills, and all the fine print, you are not alone! As a fellow psychologist, I found her insights so valuable, and I walked away with a much clearer understanding of how to navigate this tricky system.

Dr. Fleck is a clinical psychologist and co-owner of a neuropsych/psych testing practice outside of Chicago. She and her husband (also a clinical psychologist) started their testing-only practice almost eight years ago. Dr. Fleck meets with clients ages 4 and older and for a variety of referral requests including ADHD, autism, Specific Learning Disorders, and various psychiatric concerns (e.g., mood disorders, anxiety, traumatic stress, personality disorders). Dr. Fleck also works part-time as a consultant to other mental health professionals; specifically, she meets with professionals who need support around billing for testing, understanding CPT codes, and trying to avoid insurance audits.

Here are some of my biggest takeaways from our chat:

💡 Insurance companies love to keep us guessing. Dr. Fleck’s experience with a Blue Cross audit was a real wake-up call. The hidden rules, confusing policies, and endless paperwork? It’s enough to make your head spin!

💡 Even if you're self-pay, billing matters. I learned that using the right CPT codes and staying within time limits can make a huge difference in getting reimbursed. It’s not just about submitting a superbill—it’s about submitting it correctly.

💡 Expert guidance is a game-changer. Dr. Fleck took a look at my superbill setup and gave me real, actionable tips to improve it. No more second-guessing—I finally feel like I know what I’m doing!

💡 Set clear expectations with clients. Being upfront about what insurance may or may not cover can prevent a lot of frustration down the road. Transparency is key, and it helps both us and our clients navigate the process with fewer surprises.

I left this conversation feeling so much more confident in my billing practices, and I know you will too. If you need support in this area, Dr. Fleck is the person to talk to! She knows her stuff, and her guidance is absolutely worth it.

  • Ep 57 | Catching Up with Misty Bonta – From Private Practice to Big Dreams
    2025/02/07

Welcome back to another Episode of Empower LEP Podcast!

I am beyond excited because I got to sit down with the incredible Misty Bonta from Get Psyched! If you’ve been listening for a while, you might remember Misty from about a year ago when she was just starting her private practice. Well, let me tell you—she’s been absolutely crushing it!

In this episode, Misty takes us through her journey—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. She opens up about her past, including some really tough experiences in high school that ignited her passion for mental health. She knew even back then that she wanted to be the supportive, understanding adult that she wished she had during those years.

Fast forward to today, and Misty is running a thriving private practice, diving into Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs), collaborating with parents, and expanding her reach through workshops and trainings. And get this—she’s even working toward becoming a Non-Public Agency (NPA) so she can support school districts in a bigger way! She’s a little nervous about the leap, but honestly, I have zero doubt that she’s going to make it happen.

Oh, and here’s something so cool—Misty is writing a children’s book about mental health, told through the eyes of her beloved dog! 🐶📖 I cannot wait to read it!

Misty’s story is one of resilience, passion, and the power of believing in yourself. I left this conversation feeling so inspired, and I know you will too!

If you want to connect with Misty, you can find her at GetPsychedInc.com or reach out to her at getpsyched.sd@gmail.com. And if you're a school psychologist (or just love being part of a great community), be sure to join her Facebook group, "Life and Times of a School Psychologist."

  • Ep 56 | Mastering Your Practice Finances with CFO Carla Titus
    2025/01/31

In this Episode of Empower LEP, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Carla Titus, the founder and CEO of Wealth & Worth Within.

Carla is a fractional CFO who specializes in supporting group practices, and let me tell you—she knows her stuff when it comes to the financial side of running a business. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by pricing, budgeting, or even knowing what kind of financial support you need (bookkeeper? accountant? CFO?), this conversation is for you!

We covered so much in this episode, including:
✨ The key financial roles that can support your practice as you grow
✨ How to set up pricing and compensation in a way that makes sense
✨ Why having financial guidance (even for a one-time setup) can be a game-changer

One of my biggest takeaways? Getting financial support isn’t just about the numbers—it’s about feeling empowered in your business. Carla broke it all down in such a clear and practical way, and I know her advice will be incredibly helpful for anyone navigating the financial side of private practice.

If you’ve been stressing about money, pricing, or how to set your business up for long-term success, Carla and her team at Wealth & Worth Within can help. They make finances feel way less intimidating and so much more manageable.

  • Ep 55 | What’s in Your Scope? Understanding Your Role as an LEP
    2025/01/24

Hi Empowered LEPs! It’s me, Jana, for this solo episode, and I’m diving into a topic that’s both super important and sometimes misunderstood: our scope of practice as licensed educational psychologists.

Before we get into it, I’ve got to share how much my mentorship group means to me. It’s such a privilege to connect with aspiring and practicing LEPs, and it honestly keeps me motivated to continue sharing what I’ve learned. You all inspire me every day.

Now, let’s talk about the scope of practice. It’s one of those things we all need to get crystal clear on—especially if you’re out on your own in private practice, making all those big decisions. I’ll walk you through what’s outlined in the California Business and Professions Code so you can feel confident you’re staying within your lane and making ethical choices.

Here’s what I’ll cover in this episode:

    • The unique strengths we bring as LEPs, like our school-based experience and ability to support academic success.
    • The specific areas we’re trained to handle, including educational evaluation, diagnosing learning-related disorders, counseling, consultation, and intervention coordination.
    • Why it’s so important to stay focused on our psychoeducational expertise and avoid crossing into areas like medical diagnoses.

This episode is all about helping you feel empowered to embrace your role and use your expertise to make a difference.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas! If you’re enjoying the podcast, leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts—it also gets you entered into a mentorship session giveaway with me. And don’t hesitate to reach out anytime at jana@empowerlep.com if you have questions or suggestions for future topics.

  • Ep 54 | Managing Intakes and Administrative Support
    2025/01/10

In this solo episode, Jana opens by sharing her heartfelt concern for those affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California. With family in the impacted areas, she offers her empathy and support to everyone navigating this tragedy.

Shifting the focus, Jana dives into the importance of finding passion and inspiration in one’s work. She reflects on her own transformative journey, describing how she moved from a life fueled by dissatisfaction to one driven by purpose and joy—even though it required embracing greater risks and vulnerabilities.

Along the way, Jana also shares the pivotal role that administrative support has played in her business. By delegating tasks like managing the intake process, she’s been able to increase her productivity while reducing the stress of constantly monitoring leads and phone calls. She highlights the importance of creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain consistency, particularly when transitioning between support staff.

Finally, Jana recommends two insightful books: Reader, Come Home by Maryanne Wolf and The Collapse of Parenting by Dr. Leonard Sax. These recommendations reflect her dedication to personal growth and professional development.
