  • We currently have 2 series running on our channel - the IT Business Partner Playbook, and the Executive Leadership overview

The first is a weekly series featuring Business Relationship Managers and IT Business Partners from across the globe. Unrehearsed, unprepared, unrestricted and maybe a little unpredictable... this podcast aims to share our guests' experiences, to provide insights and ideas to our listeners. Some will be looking for inspiration, others for tips and tools, while others will be looking for some support and comfort. While the role can be hugely rewarding, it can also be extremely tough, and it's important to know that whatever you're going through as a BRM/BP, there are others out there going through it too. You're not alone, and there is a beaming light at the end of the tunnel. You might just be in the wrong tunnel... Tune in for smiles, sincerity and hopefully not too much sauce!

Our second series is AI generated. Gasp! Yes, we let the robots do the talking in this 4-part series which focuses on the concise courses we've created to guide executives through the maze of Governance, Security, Digital Transformation - and Business Relationship. Listen as Joe and Sarah discuss our Executive Leadership Series (ELS) - designed to help leadership understand and oversee effective practices, using business language and a four-stage life cycle: "Doing the right things," "Doing them the right way," "Getting them done well," and "Getting the benefits,"

Our hosts break down each stage of the life cycle, providing a cookbook-style approach that outlines how to implement the strategies, the necessary components, and what can go wrong. Throughout their discussion, they highlight our real-world examples from major organisations like GE, Pfizer, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America.

    Our ELS courses were created by Gary Hardy, co-creator of the COBIT framework and include contributions from;

Carolynn Chalmers - CEO, Good Governance Academy

Frank Wander - CEO, People Productive

Jimmy Heschel - Global Head of Digital Security, Red Bull

John Thorp - Chair, ValIT development committee

Kip Fanta - Founder, Kip Fanta Group

Martin Smith - Chairman and Founder, The Security Awareness Special Interest Group

  • The IT Business Partner Playbook
    2024/11/26

Today I was joined by James Rowbotham MBA, BRMP® , a BRM of almost 8 years who has worked for large corporates, as well as in higher education.

🎓 From MBA to Building BRM Functions

James detailed his journey from an MBA student to creating a BRM function at Sheffield Hallam University. His focus on relationships and collaboration emphasised how critical it is to align IT with business goals and keep asking “why” to tackle problems strategically.

    💡 Strategic Alignment & Oversight

We discussed how BRMs bridge IT and business, ensuring programs deliver real value. James highlighted the importance of a clear strategy and top-level, business-led prioritisation to prevent resource drain on unnecessary projects.

    🤝 IT as Translator

BRMs are not just connectors—they’re translators (and at times, marriage guidance counsellors...). James underscored how crucial it is for IT to understand and communicate business needs effectively, sometimes through tough but necessary conversations.

📈 The Role of BRMs in Times of Change

In times of restructuring, BRMs bring invaluable insights to the table, saving resources, driving efficiency, and converging strategies. James’ personal stories showed how the role has transformed organisations and personal lives.

    🎯 Continuous Learning & Community

James is now reconnecting with the BRM community and plans to pursue further certification. His advice? Learn from others, share your wins, and embrace the challenges that come with this transformative role!

My sincere thanks to James for joining me today - he is an archetypal BRM; a great story-teller, people-focussed and very driven. It's one of the reasons I love being involved with this field. I really enjoyed our conversation and look forward to following his BRM journey!

    2024/11/22

The IT Business Partner Playbook. Unrehearsed. Unprepared. Unrestricted.

[Please forgive the sound. Due to the delayed recording, I was in a different office, with different kit (well, none actually). We're reworking the audio and will upload asap!].

Welcome to episode 1! Today I spoke to Jeremy Byrne, MBRM – a Senior IT Business Partner at Rolls-Royce and #BRMlegend in the making for over 12 years.

Jeremy shared his experiences and insights on strategic planning, benefits realization, and the importance of communication and transparency in the BRM role.

We discussed the challenges of planning and budgeting in the public sector, the ownership and management of business systems, and the impact of leadership changes on the BRM function.

Jeremy also touched on the potential of AI in the workplace, the challenges of transitioning to a strategic role in BRM, and the importance of understanding relationships and dynamics within a company during the onboarding process.

Join us for Episode 2 when we'll be speaking to Dawn Millward, Business Partner (IT & Digital) for Birmingham City University
