  • Matthew 16.21-23 | You are an offense to me
    2025/06/16
It was clear to the apostles that Jesus was the Messiah. The notion that He was the suffering Messiah was much harder to digest. It required frequent repetition from Jesus to make real to their minds the thought that their Lord had to suffer and be killed. One of those instances is in Matthew 16. Let’s read this passage. Matthew 16.21-23.
Matthew 16.21. From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!"
23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."

  • Matthew 16.27-28 | Some standing here shall not taste death
    2025/06/15
The hopes of the disciples about the Messianic reign were crushed when Jesus told them plainly that He was to die. They were not prepared for such a shocking revelation.
As an encouragement, the Lord Jesus assured them that though His death was near, yet the time will come when His kingdom will be established with great power. Let’s read this passage, Matthew 16.27-28.
Matthew 16.27. "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and will then recompense every man according to his deeds.
28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."

  • Matthew 17.14-21 | O faithless and perverse generation
    2025/06/14
The Lord Jesus often had to bear with unbelief among His own disciples. The story of the healing of an epileptic boy is one example among many. Let’s read this passage. It contains a wonderful lesson on faith and power. Matthew 17.14-21.
Matthew 17:14. And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,
15 "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
16 "So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him."
17 Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me."
18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"
20 So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
21 "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."
