  • Matthew 16.21-23 | You are an offense to me
    2025/06/16
It was clear to the apostles that Jesus was the Messiah. The notion that He was the suffering Messiah was much harder to digest. It required frequent repetition from Jesus to make real to their minds the thought that their Lord had to suffer and be killed. One of those instances is in Matthew 16. Let’s read this passage. Matthew 16.21-23.
Matthew 16.21. From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!"
23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."

  • Matthew 16.27-28 | Some standing here shall not taste death
    2025/06/15
The hopes of the disciples about the Messianic reign were crushed when Jesus told them plainly that He was to die. They were not prepared for such a shocking revelation.
As an encouragement, the Lord Jesus assured them that though His death was near, yet the time will come when His kingdom will be established with great power. Let’s read this passage, Matthew 16.27-28.
Matthew 16.27. "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and will then recompense every man according to his deeds.
28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."

  • Matthew 17.14-21 | O faithless and perverse generation
    2025/06/14
The Lord Jesus often had to bear with unbelief among His own disciples. The story of the healing of an epileptic boy is one example among many. Let’s read this passage. It contains a wonderful lesson on faith and power. Matthew 17.14-21.
Matthew 17:14. And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,
15 "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
16 "So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him."
17 Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me."
18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"
20 So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
21 "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

  • Matthew 17.14-21 | You will say to this mountain
    2025/06/13
This lesson constitutes the second part of a study on Matthew 17.14-21, a passage describing Jesus healing a boy with an unclean spirit.
    This mountain
The last time, much of our attention was focused on v. 17 where Jesus said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you?
Today, we will explore the meaning of v. 20. In this declaration, Jesus promised a share in His power to anyone who has faith. If you have faith as a mustard seed, He said, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Even if your faith is no greater than a grain of mustard seed, it has unlimited potential and through God’s power can make everything possible. This point is driven home with the hyperbolic analogy of moving mountains. When Jesus speaks about moving mountains, of course He does not literally mean moving mountains. He is speaking figuratively of great power.
But notice carefully the sentence. You will say to this mountain. Jesus does not seem to be just talking about a faith to move mountains. He seems to be pointing to a particular mountain. This mountain. Later in this lesson, we will take a closer look at this observation to see if we can learn something from it.

  • Matthew 18.1-4 | Unless you become like children
    2025/06/11
The Lord Jesus, in His teaching, used the example of a child as a model of true discipleship. Most Christians know this passage in Matthew 18 where Jesus instructed His disciples to 'become like children.' Let's read it from v. 1 to v. 4.
Matthew 18.1. At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them,
3 and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  • Matthew 18.5-9 | That man through whom the stumbling block comes
    2025/06/10
The followers of Christ have to face constant temptations. These temptations are referred to as 'stumbling blocks' in Matthew 18. They are a real danger and Jesus speaks very seriously about them. This is what He teaches in Matthew 18.5-9.
    Matthew 18.5. "And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;
6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea.
7 "Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!
8 "And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the eternal fire.
9 "And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into the fiery hell.

  • Matthew 18.10 | Their angels always behold the face of My Father
    2025/06/09
In our previous lesson, we were studying Matthew 18.5-9 where Jesus said to His disciples that they must take great care not to cause anyone who believes in Him to stumble. We saw that the stumbling is to be understood in the very serious sense of falling away from Christ.
'Because God cares so much for each of His little ones,' Jesus said, 'That the punishment of the person responsible for their stumbling will be terrible. It will be so terrible that nothing a person could do to himself can compare with God's action against that person.'
'It would be better if he ties a great milestone around his neck and jumps in the depth of the sea. Even that is nothing compared to how God will deal with him on the day of judgment.'

  • Matthew 18.15-20 | If your brother sins
    2025/06/08
Sin in the Christian community is a matter of great concern for Jesus. It can be so damaging to the church that the Lord lays down very specific steps as to how the problem is to be handled. These steps are described in Matthew 18.15-20. This is what Jesus says.
    A brother who sins
Matthew 18.15. "And if your brother sins, go and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
17 "And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer.
18"Truly I say to you, whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19"Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
20"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst."
