  • The Trouble with Harriet - Two Murderous Tales
    2024/10/25

The Trouble with Harriet - Two Murderous Tales
    News of the Times Episode 398 | 1836 & 1843
In today’s episode we look at two cases involving women named Harriet.
Our first case from 1836 involves 21-year-old unhappily married Harriet Tarver. Harriet’s husband, Thomas, has abandoned her at least once and has only come back with some forceful parish pressure. A bit of a do-it-yourself health enthusiast, he has taken a few tablets of his own concoction, as well as the rice pudding Harriet has left him and died shortly afterwards. Was it his self-medication? Or the rice pudding that had been purchased?
In our second case from 1843, Harriet Monkton has been found, poisoned, in the toilet room next ot the church which she regularly attends. It is found that she pregnant and the initial suspicion is that she had been overcome with the shame and took matters into her own hands. But if this is the case, where is the phial that the poison would have been contained in? It cannot be found in the privy or on the grounds of the church anywhere.
Two murderous tales involving a troublesome, or troubled, Harriet is today’s episode.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

  • Disturbing Cases of Guillotined Heads - Frankenstein Re-animation
    2024/10/23

    Disturbing Cases of Severed Heads
    News of the Times Episode 53 | 1880 - 1885
In today’s episode we dip further into disturbing tales with three stories where scientists of the time, inspired by Marry Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein, look to re-animate heads of criminals who faced the guillotine.

In Victorian society, there was no punishment worse than having one’s body interfered with in unnatural experimentation.

Our first story from 1880 is a crime so infamous and disturbing, it was referenced in initial criminal behaviour medical annals for decades after his death.

The second case from 1884 of the murder of a policeman’s widow, seemed to have more to do with the possibility of further scientific experiments on the heels of the previously mentioned crime. Dog lovers, look away.

In our last story of a treble murderer from 1885, the scientist involved in the creepy re-animation of the head would, for over a decade, swear that he had managed to bring back consciousness to the decapitated head although he had initially promised he would not due to the horror that would entail.

For those who like the weird and strange, (or stranger in this case!), check out our further particulars section at the end of the episode where we recount a house, under a barrage of stones which come from an unseen hand where the source, despite intense efforts, cannot be traced. The onslaught lasted for days.

Three creepy Halloween tales involving guillotined heads is today’s episode.

    2024/10/21

The Creepy Case of the Shaftesbury Avenue Murder
News of the Times Episode 396 | 1894
In today’s episode, it is 1894 London. Mr Rasch has come home from his walk only to discover his house burgled of all its valuables whilst the children were playing downstairs.
Seeking his wife, he finds her in the bedroom, her ankles tied together with considerable bruising around the face. She is dead, although her body is still warm.
As police and the medical examiner arrive on the scene, what comes out is a highly disturbing account involving getting the young 8 year old daughter to play the piano loudly at the request of one of the murderous team - in effect, asking the daughter to play to cover the screams of her mother whilst she is being murdered.
The case was considered highly shocking at the time and impacted the community for weeks.
We take a look at the background, the crime and the capture, involving Scotland yard, in the The Creepy Case of the Shaftesbury Av Murder,
For those who are gearing up for the forthcoming halloween, check out our further particulars segment where we take a look at some of the superstitions from long ago which some still follow here in England including how to make your house lucky.

    2024/10/18

Lydia Green - The Gruesome Murder That Shocked Victorian London
News of the Times Episode 395 | 1877
In today’s episode it is 1887, some two miles north of Whitechapel.
A horrific crime has taken place against Lydia Green within her own home in the morning hours whilst the rest of her family are downstairs starting breakfast.
A suspect is quickly identified and then claims of sweeping police incompetence come to the fore – not very unlike the claims that would be made during the ripper investigations that would take place roughly 1 year later.
Although the crime itself is unrelated to the ripper crimes – we are able to get a pre-ripper snapshot of police techniques, investigations and failures. For true ripperologists, note the same coroner who would be such a central figure in the series of crimes to come.
For those who enjoy the uneasy and unusual, do check out our creepy tale from the 1878 papers where the dead seem to like making phone calls to the living in the early hours of the morning.
A terrible crime, a strange escape, and an investigation and chase hampered by police incompetence 1 year before the ripper crimes for the murderer of Lydia Green is today’s episode.

  • Disturbing Cases of Matricide - Darkest Family Secrets of the 1800s
    2024/10/14

Disturbing Cases of Matricide - Darkest Family Secrets of the 1800s
    News of the Times Episode 3393 | 1878 & 1893
Matricide is rare and already rather creepy and disturbing in itself, but these two cases are more unusual than most.

Our first case from 1878 involves a young lad of 17 and his alcoholic mother. She requests a glass of water from him and becomes violently ill shortly afterwards, eventually dying and claiming that her son has poisoned her. But…. There is a twist in this very unusual story!

Our second case from 1893 comes from Ireland and involves Rev Mr George Griffiths. New to the parish, he is apparently being hounded across Ireland for debts accumulated. It is preying on his mind.

He is known to be close to his mother and then, suddenly, he claims his mother has died of a heart attack, and locks the door whilst also placing a chair near the key hole so no one can go onto the room or look in. Stating he is off to start preparations for his mother’s burial, he does not come back.

This interesting case gripped the Irish papers at the time. An odd case, certainly.

For enthusiasts of the odd– for the Halloween season we have included a very strange case we came across from the United States. You can find it at the end of the episode under “further particulars”

Two disturbing cases of matricide with a dash of Halloween thrown in is today’s episode.

    2024/10/11

Brutal Murder Tales from the Georgian Era
    News of the Times Episode 391 | 1692 - 1754
In today’s episode we look at a series of disturbing stories from Georgian times.
Our first case from 1742 involves a spoiled older son, worried that he will be disinherited by his younger brother and wanting his full inheritance now, he embarks on a killing spree of his family annihilating 11 persons.
Our second case from 1750 involves a woman whose old sweetheart has returned. What to do with the new husband who is in the way?
Our third case from 1751 looks at the persecution of a couple named to be witches.
Our fourth case from 1754 involves random eating of a gibbeted person and roasting his wife. Not for the faint hearted!
Our last case is a historic famous case. It refers to the Salem Witch case but has less to do with claims of witchcraft and more to do with ghostly apparitions pointing the finger at other people. The 1692 language is slightly awkward.
5 brutal cases of murder from Georgian times is today’s episode.
