奈良県桜井市、大神神社の神体山・三輪山の南麓の初瀬の地に、天武朝創建の古刹として名高い長谷寺がある。その参道西の山の中に、與喜天満神社が鎮座している。天満神社の名の通り、祭神は菅原道真公であるが、他の天満宮のように「怨霊鎮め」の為に建てられたのではない。長谷寺の鎮守・瀧蔵権現の勧めによって、自ら雷神としてこの地に鎮まったという。それは、当地の道真公の出自との深い関係による。長谷寺参詣の土産として古くから親しまれ、今も参道で売られている「出雲人形」という土人形があるが、それは近隣の出雲集落で作られている。大和にあって出雲という不思議な名を持つこの地は、古代、当麻蹴速との相撲の為に出雲より呼び寄せられ勝利した、野見宿禰ゆかりの地で、皇后の葬儀において、殉死に代わって埴輪を供える事を提案した話が、日本書紀にある。これが出雲人形の発祥とされ、野見宿禰の子孫は土師氏を称した。その後、土師氏の一部は、菅原氏を名乗る。道真公はその出身である。道真公は、父祖ゆかりの地に自ら鎮まったのである。なお、與喜天満神社は、中世、神前で連歌の行われる場所としても名高かった。歌人としても名を轟かせた道真公は、連歌の守護神でもあったのだ。更級日記では夢告を授かる場所としても描かれる初瀬。古の「コンテンツの聖地」巡礼記。
