Max est de retour ! Un nouveau mari, un nouveau job et cinq nouvelles recrues sous sa responsabilité... Prise au piège dans le grand incendie de Londres, puis piégée aux Thermopyles, Max doit lutter pour remettre l'Histoire sur les rails. Et éviter de voir le monde occidental bouleversé.

De la rencontre avec Isaac Newton au champ de bataille sanglant d'Azincourt, rien ne se déroule comme prévu. Mais c'est surtout à Troie, alors qu'Achille et Hector s'apprêtent à s'affronter sous ses yeux, que le destin de Max va se jouer.

Les visites dans le passé reprennent à l'institut de recherche historique de St Mary. Maxwell et ses excentriques confrères historiens partent pour de nouvelles aventures à travers le temps. Promue directrice du département d'Histoire, Maxwell va contrer, à l'aide de son équipe, les plans de leurs ennemis qu'ils croyaient neutralisés. C'est l'Histoire tout entière qui est menacée par ces fantômes du passé. Au bord du burn out, l'historienne utilise ses dernières forces pour maintenir l'équilibre dans l'Histoire et dans sa vie privée.

Max is no stranger to taking matters into her own hands. Especially when she's had A Brilliant Idea. Yes, it will mean breaking a few rules, but - as Max always says - they're not her rules. Seconded to the Time Police to join in the hunt for the renegade Clive Ronan, Max is a long way from St Mary's. But life in the future does have its plus points - although not for long. A problem with the Time Map reveals chaos in the 16th century and the wrong Tudor queen on the throne. History has gone rogue, there's a St Mary's team right in the firing line and Max must step up.
